The play 'People, Places and Things' by British playwright Duncan Macmillan is currently being staged at the Art Palace Theatre in Tehran.
The 75-minute play was translated and directed by Masoumeh Beigi. She also stars in the production alongside Hamidreza Bogadi, Sara Sajadi, Iman Sayyad Borhani, Reza Karimi, Navid Asgari, Shayan Mohammadi, and Puriyeh Nikha.
This captivating performance by Duncan Macmillan tells the story of Emma, an actress whose life rapidly spirals out of control.
The talented theatre actress Emma loses consciousness during rehearsals for Chekhov's 'The Seagull' due to alcohol and drug abuse. The company she works for fires her and requires her to undergo detoxification to return to acting. Although Emma enters a rehabilitation center, initially planning to stay only long enough to obtain a sobriety certificate and return to work, she ends up staying there for several months.
Emma enjoyed life, but now she is in rehabilitation. Her first step is to admit the problem. However, the problem lies not with Emma herself, but with everything else. She needs to tell the truth, but she is smart enough to understand that such a concept does not exist. When intoxication seems like the only way to survive in the modern world, how can she achieve sobriety at all?
The play offers a harsh look at recovery and addiction to drugs and alcohol. The creation of the play was inspired by Macmillan's desire to write a leading role for an actress; he stated that he 'wrote this play firmly believing that there are many brilliant actresses who simply do not get the roles that could reveal them and where they could succeed.'
The production of 'People, Places and Things' will run at the Art Palace Theatre at No. 50, Zand-e Vakil Alley, Razi Street, Noufleh Le Chateau Street, Hafez Avenue until October 7th.
