According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), active monsoon rains are expected to persist in many regions of the country on Sunday, August 23. IMD forecasts heavy and very heavy rainfall in isolated places in parts of central and eastern India.
A weather system formed over northeastern Madhya Pradesh is influencing precipitation in central India, while another weather system is developing over the northern Bay of Bengal.
According to IMD, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the northern Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours, near the coast of West Bengal and Bangladesh. On August 23, heavy or very heavy rains are possible in various districts of Chhattisgarh, Eastern Madhya Pradesh, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha. Furthermore, IMD has predicted heavy rains in isolated places in Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, West Uttar Pradesh, and West Madhya Pradesh.
The impact of the rains will also be noticeable in some northeastern areas, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, as well as Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Eastern Uttar Pradesh is expected to experience the greatest impact from the precipitation, with a probability of very heavy rains in various locations. According to the general rainfall pattern, central India may remain in the monsoon activity zone in the coming days. Extensive rains are forecasted in Eastern and Western Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh.
IMD predicts rain in some parts of Delhi, Haryana, and Chandigarh on August 23. Although rain is not expected across the entire region, the probability of heavy precipitation remains in isolated locations. Meanwhile, extensive rains are expected in several places in Konkan and Goa, coastal Karnataka, Kerala and Mahé, Lakshadweep, Odisha, Western Bengal, and the Andaman and Nicobar islands. Rain is also possible in some parts of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Telangana, and South India.
These weather changes are occurring due to the mutual influence of several weather systems along with the monsoon trough. The monsoon trough currently extends from Amritsar through parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh to the northeastern Bay of Bengal. The new weather complex forming in the Bay of Bengal may intensify rainfall activity in the coming days.
