Officials informed the news agency PTI that a cargo vessel registered under the Panamanian flag, which was transporting iron ore from Odisha to Singapore, sank in the Bay of Bengal on Saturday.
The ship sank approximately 240 nautical miles off the coast of Paradip, carrying 24 crew members on board. According to available data, most of the crew members were Chinese.
A search and rescue operation was initiated by the Indian Coast Guard and the Indian Navy, and other vessels in the area were notified to provide assistance.
A high-ranking IPS officer told PTI that it is not yet known how many crew members managed to be rescued.
