Netherlands defeated India 3-1 in World Hockey Championship

In an important match of the 2026 World Hockey Championship, held at the Wegner Stadium in Amsterdam, the Indian team suffered a 3-1 defeat against the Netherlands. A single-second error proved decisive in the game during the third quarter, after which the Dutch players managed to take control and secure the victory.

The Netherlands exerted pressure on India by using fast attacks based on short passes near the defense. In the 52nd minute, during a swift attack from the right flank, Hoedemakers scored the decisive goal, giving the Netherlands a 3-1 lead.

However, India had a great chance for a comeback afterward. Rajinder gained control of the ball in the Dutch penalty area and skillfully earned a penalty corner for India. The captain of the Indian team, Harmanpreet Singh, took responsibility for the shot toward the goal corner. His first attempt was blocked by a Dutch defender, leading to another penalty corner.

The second time, Harmanpreet Singh did not make mistakes and delivered a powerful low shot that went past the goalkeeper and into the net. Despite the goal, the Netherlands' 3-1 advantage proved too large for the Indian team.

In the first two quarters, the Indian team demonstrated excellent control over the match, but in the 41st minute, the Netherlands suddenly launched an aggressive attack from the right flank. Before the Indian goalkeeper Suraj Kakkar could save the ball, the Dutchman Duko Teijenkamp deflected it in for a goal.

India had several chances both to increase its score and to come back into the game, but all slipped away. In the 24th minute, Dilpreet Singh was directly in front of the goal thanks to a brilliant pass from Manpreet Singh, but the Dutch goalkeeper made a brilliant save. When India was awarded a penalty corner, Harmanpreet Singh's shot was either blocked by Dutch forwards or went out of bounds. In the 43rd minute, Shilanand Lakra earned a penalty corner, but the variation executed with Sanjay could not overcome the Dutch defense.

Indian midfielder Manpreet Singh became one of the main stars of the match, energizing the team and independently stopping Dutch attacks on three penalty corners. Goalkeepers Mohit and Kakkar also demonstrated numerous outstanding saves.

Celebrities from the world of cricket attended this tense match. Among those present were former Indian captain Rahul Dravid and Steve Waugh from Australia.

Indian Hockey Team Defeats Wales 3-1 at World Cup

In celebration of the 80th anniversary of Independence Day, India received a bright sporting gift: the Indian hockey team began its journey at the World Hockey Championship with a convincing 3-1 victory over Wales.

In its first match, the team demonstrated a powerful start to the tournament. The Indian team's next game is scheduled for Monday, August 17, against a strong opponent—England. A win in this match will allow the team to advance to the next stage with heightened morale.

The start of the game was somewhat tense for India. Wales adopted an aggressive stance from the beginning and put pressure on the Indian goal. Welsh player Pritchard created several excellent scoring opportunities. However, Indian goalkeeper Suraj managed to repel all of Wales' attacks, remaining unwavering, which allowed India to overcome the initial slump.

After the Indian players found their rhythm, they did not slow down. The first goal was scored by Sunil, who converted a penalty corner through dribbling. Immediately after this, a brilliant combination involving captain Harmanpreet Singh and Sanjay brought even more success. Harmanpreet, using a penalty corner, struck a precise shot directly into the goal, giving India a confident 2-0 lead.

In the first quarter, the Indian team looked dominant. The fast play of Hardik Singh and the versatile play of Jhermanpreet Singh broke down the Welsh defense. Some tension arose during the match when forward Shilanan Lakra sustained an injury. The game was temporarily suspended due to traces of blood on the field. Nevertheless, after first aid was administered, Shilanan returned to the bench.

In the second quarter, Wales attempted to come back into the game. Pritchard managed to beat the Indian goalkeeper with a strong shot, but luck was on India's side, and the ball deflected off the goalpost. Then Abhishek created an opportunity for India's third goal, but his shot was slightly inaccurate. However, captain Harmanpreet Singh corrected this mistake and scored the third goal.

Wales managed to score its first goal, thus balancing the game. After an incorrect tactical foul by the opponent, the referee requested a video review, and Wales was awarded a penalty. Goalkeeper Mohit showed bravery trying to stop the ball but could not keep it within the goal. The video referee confirmed that the ball had completely crossed the goal line before the referee's whistle blew, and Sam Wales scored the goal.

Sai Sudarshan ruled out of Sri Lanka series due to injury; India squad changes discussed

The Indian team faced an unwelcome surprise before the start of the two-match test series against Sri Lanka. Left-handed batsman Sai Sudarshan has been forced to withdraw from the series due to injury. He sustained damage to his big toe and was undergoing rehabilitation at the Indian Cricket Council's (BCCI) Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bangalore.

Sai Sudarshan's selection for the Indian squad touring Sri Lanka was contingent upon receiving medical clearance. He was actively recovering from the injury and had resumed net practice. However, he ultimately could not fully recover by the time the Test series began and was excluded from both matches.

Sudarshan's exclusion will inevitably lead to adjustments in the Indian team's batting lineup. His presence provided a reliable option for a left-handed batsman. The coaching staff now needs to formulate an optimal squad from the available players.

Devdhadhath Padikkal is among the players who might get a chance to step in for Sudarshan. Furthermore, the team has other options for reinforcement in the batting line-up. Before the start of the Test series, the team management must make an important decision regarding the playing XI.

Sudarshan was battling a minor big toe injury. Because of this, he could not travel with the Indian team to Sri Lanka and remained in rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence in Bangalore. His condition was closely monitored.

Initially, there were hopes that Sudarshan would recover completely in time to participate in the Test series against Sri Lanka. Although he started training, his physical condition proved insufficient for participation in the series.

This two-match series between India and Sri Lanka is part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27. Consequently, every earned point for both teams holds significant value.

The Indian team intends to strengthen its position in the current WTC cycle. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka aims to capitalize on the advantages of playing on home soil. It is expected that the Indian batsmen and bowlers will be tested in conditions favorable to spin bowling.

Before the Test series commences, the Indian team is participating in a three-day friendly match in Colombo. This match will allow assessment of how well the players adapt to Sri Lankan conditions. The role of spin bowling is anticipated to be key in the Test series.

The first match of the series between India and Sri Lanka will take place from August 15 to 19 at the Galle International Stadium in Galle, starting at 10 am. The second and final match will be held from August 23 to 27 at the SSC Ground in Colombo, also starting at 10 am.

The Indian squad for the tour of Sri Lanka includes: Shubman Gill (Captain), KL Rahul (Vice-Captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant (Wicketkeeper), Devdhadhath Padikkal, Dhruv Jurel (Wicketkeeper), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Sutara, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Barara, and Saransh Jana. Note: Sai Sudarshan was included in this list conditional on receiving medical clearance, but he will now not participate in the Test series due to injury.

India's schedule in Sri Lanka:

  • August 7-9: Three-day friendly match, Colombo
  • August 15-19: First Test, Galle, starting at 10:00 AM
  • August 23-27: Second Test, Colombo, starting at 10:00 AM
