Manchester United suffered humiliating defeat to Hull at the start of the Premier League season

Manchester United suffered a humiliating 2-0 defeat to Hull City on Saturday, marking an extremely poor start to their Premier League campaign. Michael Carrick's team faced goals in the first half from Semiu Ajayi and Nobel Mendy at MKM stadium in Kingston upon Hull, located in eastern England, on August 22, 2026.

Hull, returning to the Premier League for the first time since 2017, managed to overcome the struggling United with bright play despite missing ten players due to injuries. This start was painful for United, who were expected to challenge for the title after finishing third last season.

There were few signs on the pitch that United could compete with champions Arsenal on this dismal day in Hull. Yuri Tilemans and Andrey Santos looked inconspicuous in their midfield debuts after moving from Aston Villa and Chelsea, respectively.

Michael Carrick dismissed claims that United had a gentle start to the season, noting that the trip to Hull would be followed by a home match against Ipswich, another newly promoted side. However, the manager's caution proved prophetic.

Former England captain Alan Shearer summarized United's condition with a harsh verdict: 'Manchester United is shocking, there is no hunger, they were awful,' stated the BBC sports commentator.

Last season, Carrick's stability during his interim management following the turbulent tenure of Ruben Amorim played a significant role in United's revival. Now, as the permanent manager, Carrick must fight for United's first English title since 2013, adding pressure he did not have last season.

Carrick is demanding more transfers, and United has agreed on a deal for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba. After this pathetic performance, he will demand even more.

Last season, Hull became the first team to finish sixth in the Championship and gain promotion through the playoffs since 2010, when Blackpool achieved it. Tigers coach Sergey Yakirovich insisted this week that Hull could disprove the doubts of skeptics who considered them doomed to relegation.
