A highly intense badminton match took place on Saturday at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi. The star Indian pair, Trisha Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, failed to reach the final of the 2026 World Championships, but they captured the hearts of millions of Indians with their magnificent skill.

In the women's doubles semi-final, this Indian team faced Liu Shenshu and Tan Ning from China, who were the world number one and reigning champions. The match lasted one hour and 11 minutes, and Trisha-Gayatri lost with scores of 21-18, 13-21, 8-21. Despite the defeat, they secured their place in history by winning a bronze medal.

To the cheers and support of the home crowd, Trisha and Gayatri started the game without fear. The Indian pair demonstrated aggressive play from the very beginning. At one point, the Chinese team led 18-16, but Trisha and Gayatri showed incredible spirit, winning five consecutive points and taking the first set 21-18.

The situation changed in the second set. Until the score reached 12-12, both teams maintained a tense confrontation. After that, the Chinese pair adjusted their tactics, shortening rallies and applying pressure, to win the second set 21-13. In the final and decisive set, the Chinese number one completely dominated, winning the match 21-8.

Trisha Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand became the second women's doubles pair in history to win a medal at the World Championships after Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa. India defeats South Africa 6:1 in Women's Hockey World Cup 2026

At the 2026 Women's Hockey World Cup, the Indian team demonstrated impressive play, securing a convincing 6:1 victory over South Africa. The match, held on Tuesday at the Wagner Stadium as part of Group D, was dominant for India, which scored goals across all three quarters, making the game one-sided.

India first scored a goal in the first quarter, followed by two in the second, and three in the third quarter. Consequently, by the end of the third period, the Indian team had a massive lead of 6:0. South Africa managed to score only one goal in the final fifteen minutes, but by that time, the match was already completely under India's control.

Goals scored by Indian players

The first goal for India was scored by Sunilita Toppo in the 11th minute from an open play goal. Then Navneet Kaur converted a penalty into a goal in the 17th minute, increasing India's lead to 2:0. At the 25th minute, Sushila Chanu scored another goal from a penalty, putting India ahead 3:0. In the third period, the Indian squad scored a flurry of goals.

Dipika Sehrawat scored an open play goal in the 38th minute, followed by Lalaremsiam scoring in the 44th minute, and Sakshi Rana scoring a magnificent open play goal in the 45th minute, bringing the score to 6:0.

South Africa finally managed to score in the 55th minute thanks to Kylie De Val, who converted a penalty, leading to a 6:1 scoreline. No further goals were scored after this, and India secured the victory.

India ranks first in Group D

Thanks to this big win over South Africa, India overtook China in the Group D standings and took first place. However, India's position is not yet entirely secure, and the result of the next match will be decisive. For South Africa, the defeat was extremely disappointing; the team currently has no points, and a goal difference of -9 has excluded them from the title race.

Upcoming match against England

India's main challenge in the World Cup will take place on Thursday (August 20), when the team plays its last first-round match against England. To advance to the second pool, India will need at least a draw in this match. If India secures a draw against England, it will proceed to the next round, and one point gained from the draw with China will also count towards it.

Indian Hockey Team Defeats Wales 3-1 at World Cup

In celebration of the 80th anniversary of Independence Day, India received a bright sporting gift: the Indian hockey team began its journey at the World Hockey Championship with a convincing 3-1 victory over Wales.

In its first match, the team demonstrated a powerful start to the tournament. The Indian team's next game is scheduled for Monday, August 17, against a strong opponent—England. A win in this match will allow the team to advance to the next stage with heightened morale.

The start of the game was somewhat tense for India. Wales adopted an aggressive stance from the beginning and put pressure on the Indian goal. Welsh player Pritchard created several excellent scoring opportunities. However, Indian goalkeeper Suraj managed to repel all of Wales' attacks, remaining unwavering, which allowed India to overcome the initial slump.

After the Indian players found their rhythm, they did not slow down. The first goal was scored by Sunil, who converted a penalty corner through dribbling. Immediately after this, a brilliant combination involving captain Harmanpreet Singh and Sanjay brought even more success. Harmanpreet, using a penalty corner, struck a precise shot directly into the goal, giving India a confident 2-0 lead.

In the first quarter, the Indian team looked dominant. The fast play of Hardik Singh and the versatile play of Jhermanpreet Singh broke down the Welsh defense. Some tension arose during the match when forward Shilanan Lakra sustained an injury. The game was temporarily suspended due to traces of blood on the field. Nevertheless, after first aid was administered, Shilanan returned to the bench.

In the second quarter, Wales attempted to come back into the game. Pritchard managed to beat the Indian goalkeeper with a strong shot, but luck was on India's side, and the ball deflected off the goalpost. Then Abhishek created an opportunity for India's third goal, but his shot was slightly inaccurate. However, captain Harmanpreet Singh corrected this mistake and scored the third goal.

Wales managed to score its first goal, thus balancing the game. After an incorrect tactical foul by the opponent, the referee requested a video review, and Wales was awarded a penalty. Goalkeeper Mohit showed bravery trying to stop the ball but could not keep it within the goal. The video referee confirmed that the ball had completely crossed the goal line before the referee's whistle blew, and Sam Wales scored the goal.
