Mduduzi Shabalaala discusses injury that cost him World Cup chances

Kaizer Chiefs star Mduduzi Shabalaala shared details about an unusual injury that abruptly ended his breakthrough season and effectively derailed his hopes of making the South African national team for the FIFA World Cup.

The 22-year-old athlete sustained the injury near the end of last season while striving to establish himself as a key player both for his club and the national team. Discussing the incident with the official Chiefs media team, Shabalaala noted that it is still difficult for him to recall the situation.

He explained that the injury occurred after a teammate, Pule Mmodi, passed him the ball, and he attempted to turn to control the situation. Shabalaala stated that he felt something on his leg, and the impact landed on his right foot.

Following this, the young player tried to avoid falling directly onto his shoulder, but the attempt to correct his body position ultimately led to the injury. He clarified that he intended to land on his back to prevent a direct fall, but that is when the problem arose.

Shabalaala reported that during the fall, his arm remained behind his body, which prevented him from turning quickly enough before the unsuccessful landing. As a result, he hit his elbow and fractured his biceps.

This injury forced him to prematurely end the season and seriously undermined his chances of being selected for the national team at the World Cup. Nevertheless, Shabalaala decided to view this setback as part of his journey rather than a reason to abandon his ambitions.

He stated that perhaps now was not his time, and he should wait for his opportunity, trusting that God has a plan for everything. The Chiefs star remains determined to return stronger and believes that his chance with Bafana Bafana will surely come.
