Duleep Trophy 2026: Vaibhavi Suryavanshi to become match star, opening chances for Shammi, Sarfaraz, and Shaw

The Duleep Trophy 2026-27 has kicked off in Bangalore, starting on Sunday, August 23rd, marking the beginning of India's domestic cricket season. Special attention in this tournament will be paid to Vaibhavi Suryavanshi, who has been appointed captain of the Eastern region. Vaibha's match will take place at Ground No. 2 in the Cricket Council of India's (BCCI) Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bangalore.

Vaibha's team will face the North-Eastern region on Sunday morning at 9:30 AM. Ishan Kishan will lead Vaibha's team. Besides Vaibha, many other players will participate in this match, showcasing their skills in this red-ball tournament.

Many players whose careers are directly linked to the future of the Indian national team are participating in the Duleep Trophy this season. 15-year-old Vaibha Suryavanshi will undergo his real test with the red ball, while 35-year-old Mohammed Shammi will once again try to make it into the Indian squad. Furthermore, players from Jammu and Kashmir will present a strong delegation in the Northern region for the first time.

The Duleep Trophy has undergone changes in recent years. In the 2024-25 season, the tournament was held in a four-team format, but this structure failed to create the previous competitive atmosphere. Therefore, the tournament will be held in its traditional inter-regional format for the second season in a row.

This domestic season is highly significant as it will help clarify India's path to the next Test World Cup final in the coming months. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy, scheduled for January-February at home venues, is also extremely important. Consequently, selectors will closely monitor player performances in the Irani Cup and Ranji Trophy after the Duleep Trophy.

Vaibha Suryavanshi, who performed brilliantly in the IPL and debuted in T20 International during his visit to England, will now face completely different challenges. Playing for the Eastern region, 15-year-old Vaibha needs to prove that he is not exclusively a white-ball player.

His red-ball statistics have not yet been impressive. In three stages of the Ranji Trophy Plate League, he scored runs in 12 innings with an average of 17.25. Now, the Duleep Trophy gives Vaibha a chance to surpass these figures.

After returning from the T20 series against Zimbabwe, Vaibha underwent a two-week red-ball camp at the Rajasthan Royals high-performance center. His training was supervised by former Indian batting coach Vikram Rathour. Vaibha's former coach, Manish Ojha, also contributed to his preparation. Considering the hot and dry conditions of Vidarbha, pitches of varying levels were prepared to strengthen his spin bowling against play. Game simulations were also conducted accounting for bounce on red soil surfaces.

In Zimbabwe, Vaibha scored two half-centuries in three innings and was named 'Player of the Series'. Now the question arises: can this talent show such rapid impact with the red ball?

The presence of players from Jammu and Kashmir in the Duleep Trophy this year will be special. Historically, players from Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana have dominated the Northern region's squad. It was not easy for players from Jammu and Kashmir to find a place.

However, the situation changed after Jammu and Kashmir won the Ranji Trophy title in March, thanks to the outstanding performance of Akib Nabi. Following this historic victory, six players from Jammu and Kashmir have been included in the Northern region's squad, including captain Kanhaiyu Wadhawan.

The story of batsman Kamran Iqbal is also very interesting. Before the Ranji Trophy final, he was not part of the Jammu and Kashmir team. He was called up at the last minute due to Shubham Hajuri's injury. In the final against Karnataka, Kamran scored an incomplete 160 runs in the second innings, preventing the opponents from hoping for a comeback. Kamran, who was previously an opening partner for Yashvi Sainsal in the U-19 Indian youth team, can now start a match for the Northern region alongside Sanat Sangwan from Delhi.

The attack of the Northern region also shows a noticeable influence from Jammu and Kashmir. Selectors are currently awaiting the conclusion of the current series between India and Sri Lanka, after which a decision will be made regarding Nabi's availability. Currently, the team includes Sunil Kumar, a left-arm fast bowler from Jammu and Kashmir, and Yudhvir Singh, a tall pacer. Sunil took 31 wickets in 9 matches last Ranji season. His four wickets in the semi-final against Bengal also played an important role in Jammu and Kashmir's historic success.

Mohammed Shammi has reached the age of 35. In recent years, he has struggled with various knee and ankle injuries. He played for India in the last Test match in 2023, after which he was out of Test team discussions for a long time.
