Automobile companies, including Tesla and several Chinese manufacturers, have initiated recalls for over 4 million vehicles. The reason for the recall across the group is safety concerns. Chinese authorities reported on Friday that the recall was caused by an issue related to the doors.
Only Tesla recalled more than 2.9 million cars manufactured in China. These models include the Model 3, Model Y, Model X, and Model S. These vehicles were recalled due to a safety issue concerning the doors.
The companies made the decision to recall during the period when hidden door handles were banned in China. In February of this year, Chinese authorities introduced a ban on the use of 'flush type door handles.' Such handles are often found in Tesla and other electric vehicles.
In China, these door handles are considered risky. Authorities believe that in the event of an accident, such handles may impede the quick opening of doors. Furthermore, because they are concealed within the doors, people outside the vehicle often cannot locate the handle, which complicates rescue efforts.
Some industry experts share this view. They argue that car manufacturers must pay attention not only to design but also to user safety. Such door handles are becoming popular in India as well, especially in electric vehicles.
Chinese authorities indicated in their notice that Tesla will implement software changes to mitigate these risks, although Tesla itself has not yet made any statements on the matter. Besides Tesla, Xiaomi recalled 390,000 vehicles, and Leapmotor recalled 370,000 vehicles. The reason for the recall of all these cars is also related to door safety.
