Kia Sorento could become a competitor to the Toyota Fortuner in the Indian market

The Toyota Fortuner enjoys significant popularity in the Indian market, attracting both executives and ordinary buyers. The success of this model is due to trust in the Toyota brand and minimal competition in the market. Currently, the direct competitor to the Fortuner is the MG Majestor.

However, the 'invincible soldier' of Toyota will face a serious challenge in the near future. Kia plans to introduce its large SUV, the Sorento, production of which has already begun in India. The company announced the launch of this model for September 4th, and it has been confirmed that it will be assembled at the Anantapur plant.

Price plays a significant role in shaping the image of any car, especially the starting price of the base configuration. This is where the Kia Sorento has the potential to have a substantial impact. According to available data, Kia may launch this model with a price starting from 28 lakh rupees.

Although the official price has not yet been announced, if Kia launches the Sorento at this price, it could create difficulties for the Fortuner. Such a pricing policy will attract the attention of buyers who are considering purchasing the Fortuner. The Sorento will be available with both a hybrid and a diesel engine.

There is a fundamental difference between the models: the Fortuner is an old-school body-on-frame SUV equipped with a diesel engine, embodying reliability and the ability to traverse difficult terrain. In contrast, the Sorento is a unibody SUV designed with an emphasis on an improved cabin, modern technology, fuel efficiency, and comfortable daily operation.

This model will arrive as a strong hybrid and may be an attractive option for city dwellers thanks to its seven-seater cabin. Thus, people who previously chose the Fortuner may consider the Sorento. Furthermore, the Sorento's diesel engine will suit those who prefer long journeys and require low torque.

The Sorento will be equipped with All-Drive functionality. It is worth noting that the Toyota Fortuner starts from a price of 34.76 lakh rupees for the exterior version. If the Sorento is introduced at a price below 30 lakh rupees, it can attract Fortuner buyers, especially those who wish to avoid using diesel fuel in cities. Ultimately, how much Sorento will affect Fortuner sales will become clear soon.

Skoda prepares to introduce CNG cars and SUVs to compete with TATA-Maruti and Hyundai

Currently, Skoda sells only gasoline-powered vehicles in the Indian market, but the company plans to introduce various powertrains in the future. The brand confirmed that a diesel-engine Superb will be released next year, and it is also preparing to launch an electric vehicle that will appear in India in 2027.

In parallel, Skoda is actively working on implementing Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) equipment. The company plans to equip the CNG powertrain with a 1.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine. This engine is used in the Kodiaq, Slavia, and Kushaq models, meaning that the CNG option could appear in all three of these vehicles. The introduction of the CNG engine will allow Skoda to compete with Tata, Maruti, and Hyundai in the Indian market.

According to AutoCar Professional, Aashish Gupta, Director of Skoda India, stated that the 1.0-liter engine and the MQB A0-IN platform are common to the Kodiaq, Slavia, and Kushaq, which opens up possibilities for all three products. Discussing the topic of CNG, he noted that the crisis in the Middle East and the blending of ethanol have undermined consumer confidence in gasoline, leading to a decline in market share. To remain competitive, companies need to offer alternatives. He emphasized that the Kodiaq segment is key for them, and this is where they aim to introduce the CNG option.

The main goal for Skoda in introducing CNG is to maintain performance while ensuring fuel efficiency. Gupta reported that consumers are willing to accept a 10–15% reduction in performance compared to gasoline counterparts when using CNG. Skoda's 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine produces 115 hp and 178 Nm of torque.

Aashish Gupta believes that buyers can purchase CNG vehicles even at a higher price because every car has its place. He also mentioned the presence of premium customers who are interested in CNG vehicles for economic benefit. Currently, the price of the Kodiaq ranges from 7.59 lakh to 12.99 lakh rupees, and the Kushaq starts from 10.99 lakh and reaches 18.99 lakh rupees. The company has not yet announced prices for the Slavia Facelift, and it will be interesting to see how Skoda integrates the CNG engine into these models.
