England's victory over Pakistan in WTC match changes tournament standings

England defeated Pakistan in the match at Headingley, winning by an innings and 103 runs. This victory allowed England to strengthen its position in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 table. Meanwhile, Pakistan suffered significant losses and dropped to last place in the table, falling even below the West Indies.

In the first match of the two-match Test series, England completely dominated Pakistan in both attack and defense. Under the leadership of Joe Root, England started the match strongly, and quick bowling restricted Pakistan's first innings to only 171 runs.

England's fast bowlers, Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue, put constant pressure on Pakistan's first innings, preventing the players from playing freely. As a result, the entire Pakistani team was bowled out for 171 runs. Following this, the English side took the lead in the first innings, completely controlling the course of the game.

Middle-order batsmen contributed to England's first innings. Harry Brook scored the most runs—91, although he did not reach a century. Captain Joe Root scored 66 runs, and Jordan Cox added 73 runs, while Dan Lawrence contributed 51 runs. With these innings, England built a strong score of 409 runs, gaining a huge advantage of 238 runs after the first innings.

After trailing by 238 runs, Pakistan had hope of improving in the second innings, but this did not happen, and their play fell apart again. Pakistan's second innings concluded in just 37.3 overs, totaling 135 runs. Thus, England won the match by an innings and 103 runs. In England's second innings, Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue took three wickets each, and Jofra Archer also started the game with the new ball and took three wickets.

Ollie Robinson was named Player of the Match for taking eight wickets in the entire Test.

Among the positive aspects for Pakistan in the first Test was left-arm spinner Ali Usman, who took five wickets in England's first innings, although despite this, Pakistan could not recover in the game.

Following the defeat in the Headingley match, Pakistan received a serious blow to its position in the WTC table. It dropped to ninth and last place, below the West Indies. Pakistan has played seven matches, winning two and losing five. Its record stands at 16 points and a win percentage (PCT) of 19.05%. Meanwhile, England, despite this major victory, ranks seventh. England has played 14 matches, winning 5, losing 8, and drawing one. It has 50 points and a PCT of 29.76%.

In the WTC 2025-27 table, Australia holds first place, having won 7 out of 9 matches, accumulating 84 points with a PCT of 77.78%. South Africa is in second place with 36 points and a PCT of 75, following 3 wins in 4 matches. New Zealand is in third place, having earned 52 points and a PCT of 72.22%, with 4 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw in 6 matches. Bangladesh is in fourth place with 40 points and a PCT of 66.67%, winning 3 out of 5 matches, losing one, and drawing one.

India currently occupies fifth place. The Indian team has played 10 matches, winning 5, losing 4, and drawing one. India has 64 points and a PCT of 53.33%. Sri Lanka is in sixth place, with 20 points and a PCT of 33.33%, having won one match out of five, lost two, and drawn two. England is in seventh place, the West Indies in eighth, and Pakistan in ninth.

If India wins the match in Colombo and Australia wins the second Test in Maker, it could bring additional benefit to the 'Shubman Brigade'.

Former England captain criticizes Pakistan team after loss in Leeds; Ramiz Raja also expresses concern

The Pakistan team faced serious difficulties after suffering a convincing defeat against England in the Leeds Test match. In Headingley, the Pakistani side could not resist England throughout the match. Observing the game, former England captain Michael Vaughan sharply criticized the team, sparking a new discussion about the state of Pakistani cricket. He stated that he had never seen such a weak and fearful Pakistani team in his career.

Furthermore, former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja also expressed concern about the team's situation. The first Test, played in Headingley, barely reached the break on the third day. Although the game was partially interrupted by rain, which affected about half of the playing time, England concluded the match before this break.

In the first innings, the Pakistani batting lineup severely faltered. There was hope that the team could recover in the second innings and challenge England, but this did not happen. Pakistani batsmen once again succumbed to the onslaught of English fast bowlers. Ultimately, the entire team managed only 37.3 overs in the second innings and was dismissed for 135 runs. Thus, England won the match by an innings and 103 runs.

This victory held particular significance for England, as Joe Root took on the responsibility as captain, beginning his new tenure. Recently, England lost a home series against New Zealand. Additionally, changes occurred between the two series: Ben Stokes retired, and Brendan McCullum stepped down as coach.

On the third day, England added another 43 runs in their first innings, bringing the total to 409 runs. Pakistan scored only 171 runs in the first innings, giving England a huge advantage of 238 runs. After this, the English fast bowlers did not give Pakistan a chance to recover.

Josh Tongue and Ollie Robinson, who took five wickets each in the first innings, also took three wickets each in the second innings. Jofra Archer supported them by taking three wickets himself. From Pakistan's side, only Mohammad Rizwan (41) showed some fight in the second innings, while the other batsmen could not support him. Imam-ul-Haq's performance was even worse: after being dismissed without scoring in the first innings, he returned to the bench with no runs in the second innings.

Pakistan's performance surprised even Michael Vaughan. Discussing this on the BBC podcast 'Test Match Special', the former English captain harshly criticized Pakistan. Vaughan stated that he had never seen such a weak and fearful Pakistani team in his cricketing career. He also expressed regret over how Pakistan played, noting that he had seen many Pakistani teams, but this team lacked the spirit and fighting spirit that Pakistani teams were long known for.

Michael Vaughan is not the only former athlete to question Pakistan's play. Former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja also expressed serious concern about the current state of Pakistani cricket. According to Raja, the most fundamental and important pillar of Pakistani cricket is its fans, but now they are disappointed with the team. He questioned why fans would continue to support the team if it continued to play like this.

Raja also mentioned Pakistan's Test results. Since 2023, Pakistan has won only 5 Test matches, 4 of which were at home. A certain pattern is visible in these victories: Pakistan relies too much on spin. That is, a team once known for its fast bowling is now focusing more on spin. According to Raja, the PCB is preparing a team that can only win matches under specific conditions and at specific venues. This strategy creates problems for Pakistan in foreign conditions.

The second Test between Pakistan and England will take place on August 27th at Lord's. After the loss in Leeds, Pakistan has little time to recover. Furthermore, Babar Azam, who recently became the captain of Pakistan, could not participate in the first Test due to a finger injury. In his absence, Salman Ahmed, the T20I captain, took charge of the team in the Test format for the first time.

In the second innings, the entire Pakistani team scored only 135 runs. Thanks to this victory, England gained a 1-0 advantage in the series. The next confrontations between the teams will take place at Lord's, starting on August 27th.

The game revealed extremely poor play from the Pakistani team, which allowed the match winner to be determined on the third day (August 21st). Problems for Pakistan began on the first day when their first innings totaled only 171 runs. Abdullah Shafique was the only player to score a half-century, accumulating 61 runs, while the other batsmen could not cope with the fast bowlers of England.

Ollie Robinson dismantled Pakistan's attacking potential by taking five wickets in the first innings. Josh Tongue also dismissed five players. The strong performance of these two fast bowlers allowed England to take control of the match from the beginning.

In response to Pakistan's 171 runs, England scored 409 runs in their first innings, giving them a huge lead of 238 runs. Four batsmen from the home team scored half-centuries. Vice-captain Harry Brook scored the most runs with 91 runs off 93 balls, using 13 fours.

After trailing by 238 runs, Pakistan needed a big second innings to stay in the game, but the batsmen failed again. Shan Masood scored 29 runs, Abdullah Shafique scored 15, and Saud Shakeel scored 14. Mohammad Rizwan struggled for some time but could not make his innings more significant. Josh Tongue, Ollie Robinson, and Jofra Archer each took three wickets.
