Pakistan sets record in Test cricket: team loses first wicket in both innings without scoring runs for the first time

Pakistan suffered a humiliating defeat against England in the match at Headingley, losing by an innings and 103 runs. The Pakistani team set a record that they probably want to forget. During this match, the team lost its first wicket in both innings without scoring a single run.

This marks the seventh such instance in the history of Test cricket for Pakistan, placing them at the forefront of this undesirable list.

In the first innings, Pakistan was struck on the very first delivery. Fast bowler Ollie Robinson dismissed Azan Aways via leg before wicket (LBW). Aways was unable to score any runs, and Pakistan's score stood at 0/1.

In the second innings, Pakistan needed to improve their situation as they were trailing England by 238 runs. However, the situation repeated itself. This time, Imam Ul Haq was unable to score runs, playing only five deliveries. His wicket fell in the second over, and the scoreboard again showed 0/1.

Although losing the first wicket without scoring runs in a single Test match is not extremely unusual, such an occurrence in both innings of one match is considered rare.

Pakistan became the first team in the history of Test matches to lose the first wicket in both innings with a zero score seven times consecutively. In the entire history of Test cricket, Pakistan has played 472 matches, meaning this situation occurred, on average, once every 68 matches. England ranks second in this list. England achieved this five times in 1098 matches, corresponding to an average interval of 220 matches.

This record was set in a match that Pakistan probably wishes to forget. England scored 409 runs in the first innings, while Pakistan's first innings concluded at only 171 runs. After falling behind by 238 runs, Pakistan could not come back into the game in the second innings. Mohammad Rizwan scored the most runs—41 runs, but wickets continued to fall from the other end, and the entire team was dismissed for 135 runs.

England's fast bowlers played a key role in the victory. Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue each took eight wickets in the match. England arrived in the West Indies after the series against Pakistan ended in a draw, but their attack in Headingley could not counter the spin and swing of the ball.
