Changes to SIM Card Purchase Rules: How to Check the Number of Numbers Registered in Your Name

Changes to SIM card purchase rules are beginning, after which people will not be able to buy more numbers once the established limit is reached. These new rules have caused some confusion among the public. This material reviews frequently asked questions and explains how to independently check the number of active SIM cards registered under a user's name.

The rules regarding SIM cards will be tightened starting August 24th. After this date, individuals who have already reached the established quota of SIM cards will not be issued new numbers.

The Ministry of Telecommunications of the Government of India (DoT) has begun tightening control over mobile connections. In most states of India, it is permitted to purchase a maximum of 9 SIM cards, whereas in the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, and northeastern regions, the limit is 6 SIM cards.

To find out how many SIM cards are registered to you or your family members, you can use the government portal Sanchar Saathi. After using this portal, a new window will open where you can see all mobile numbers registered under your name. Additionally, you can deactivate numbers that you do not use, as well as report any unknown numbers.

To request the deactivation of a number that needs to be closed, you should check the box next to the corresponding number. After submitting the application, a certain period will be provided, after which the number will be deactivated.
