The GrapheneOS Foundation released new details about its collaboration with Motorola on Friday, August 21st. The developer indicated that the first devices compatible with its operating system are expected to be launched in 2027 and should have a price higher than Google's Pixel 11 line.
GrapheneOS is built on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and is characterized by not including Google applications or services, such as Gmail, Drive, Photos, and Google Play Services. Additionally, it incorporates robust security and privacy features, such as the ability to set an alternative password for the lock screen, which allows for the complete deletion of device data. The partnership between the two companies was announced in March 2026.
In a communication made through the Mastodon social network, GrapheneOS officially informed that the first models resulting from this partnership with Motorola will be flagship devices. The developer emphasized that although these devices have superior specifications to the Pixel line, they will also have a higher cost.
For comparison, the Pixel 11 line, launched in the United States on August 12th, has prices ranging between US$ 900 and US$ 1,300 (equivalent to R$ 4,625 to R$ 6,681, based on direct conversion). In the American market, a Galaxy S26 costs US$ 900, while the iPhone 17 is available for US$ 800.
Regarding the operating system, the Motorola devices created in conjunction with GrapheneOS will not come with the system pre-installed, but rather with full support for it. Currently, only the Pixel line offers such support, as it is the only one that meets the demanding hardware criteria established by the developer to ensure maximum security and privacy.
GrapheneOS also clarified that more affordable models will take longer to meet these requirements, given that they do not offer the same security features or updates.
The foundation responsible for the system detailed the situation, attributing much of it to how Qualcomm manages this issue. The latest top-tier models equipped with Snapdragon offer the best security features. Furthermore, Motorola will need to start paying Qualcomm for lower-tier devices to receive updates for a longer period.
In an interview given to Tecnoblog and other press outlets in March 2026, Sérgio Buniac, President of Motorola, commented that updates are not inherently positive, referring primarily to entry-level and mid-range devices. He exemplified this by saying that seven updates on the Moto G could ultimately be present for inappropriate reasons. The executive also mentioned user complaints about performance drops on cheaper devices after receiving updates.
At the same time, Buniac emphasized the collaboration with the GrapheneOS Foundation. He assessed that 'it is the most secure operating system in the world. If I can truly bring elements into the Android system that make it more secure, that is greater [than updates].'
GrapheneOS is defined as a free and open-source operating system for mobile phones, based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), focused on privacy and security. It is known for being completely 'de-Googled,' dispensing with the search giant's applications and company elements present in conventional Android, such as Google Play Services. The user has the option to install these services in a sandbox, meaning a virtual environment isolated from the rest of the system.
Another layer of protection in GrapheneOS lies in correcting zero-day vulnerability flaws and offering more comprehensive security patches, in addition to allowing the disabling of system applications and providing advanced control over network and sensor permissions. One such feature was targeted by US authorities in July 2026, when police detained user Sam Tunick at Atlanta airport and requested the device code. Tunick used a GrapheneOS feature, the alternative combination, which erases device data when entered. Subsequently, Tunick was accused of obstruction of justice and disrespect for authorities.
