An owner of an Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 gaming notebook identified a peculiar behavior of Windows 11: the dedicated graphics card driver is automatically removed by the operating system if the component remains unused for several days.
To understand this situation, it is necessary to consider that many gaming laptops have a so-called 'Eco mode,' which can be turned on or off using the manufacturer's provided software. When this mode is activated, it shuts down the gaming notebook's graphics card (among other changes) and allows Windows 11 to operate using only the integrated GPU of the processor. This feature aims to optimize power consumption, which is advantageous when the laptop is not being used for gaming and requires longer battery life.
The user of the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 activated 'Eco mode' and found that after fifteen days in this state, Windows 11 proceeded to uninstall the Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti GPU driver installed in the machine. Consequently, the operating system began treating this component as if it had been physically disconnected, similar to a removed USB drive or external hard drive.
This phenomenon occurs because Windows 11 executes a maintenance routine via the pnpclean.dll file, which functions to remove driver packages associated with devices that have been absent from the computer. Although in this case the GPU was not physically removed but rather electronically shut down, the result was identical. Normally, Windows 11 sets a thirty-day period to consider a device as absent; however, this period can vary on certain equipment, as happened in this report, which was shared on Reddit and noted by WCCF Tech.
Since Windows 11 receives no signal indicating that the dedicated GPU was only temporarily deactivated, the maintenance process interprets that hardware is missing and proceeds with uninstalling the corresponding driver, simulating a permanent removal of the component. Often, the user only becomes aware of the problem when reactivating the dedicated GPU, at which point they notice it is not working or receive a new device alert in the system. The immediate solution to this setback is to reinstall the removed driver.
The simplest method to prevent this is to keep 'Eco mode' active for a very short period. Another tip, suggested by the user himself, involves disabling the maintenance routine through a change in the Windows Registry (which requires caution and must be done at one's own risk).
