Heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning struck Abu Dhabi

On Friday, August 21, the capital of Abu Dhabi experienced a dramatic summer weather episode. The rain was accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, which sharply contrasted with the usual hot and dry summer conditions.

Video footage published by Storm Centre demonstrated heavy precipitation, lightning flashes, and strong winds in Abu Dhabi. In one clip, lightning illuminated the sky with purple hues, and thunder echoed in the background while trees swayed under the force of the wind.

Another video captured a dramatic purple glow from a balcony, where repeated flashes lit up the sky. A separate segment showed rain falling evenly on the roads of Abu Dhabi, which was a welcome moment of wet weather in the middle of summer.

A resident using KT services also shared recordings showing rain pouring outside the window, through which lightning flashes were visible and thunder could be heard.

Another clip, filmed on the Abu Dhabi-Al Ain road towards Al Hazna, showed intense downpour that severely obscured the driver's view, causing difficulties. Strong winds were observed in this area, and lightning flashed in the distance.

The weather conditions necessitated precautionary measures across the capital. The Abu Dhabi Municipality temporarily closed all parks, recreation areas, and adjacent beaches, and suspended events until further notice.

The Municipality explained that these steps were taken to protect residents and ensure public safety amid the changeable weather and heavy rainfall in various parts of Abu Dhabi.

Earlier that day, the Abu Dhabi police activated speed reduction systems on several roads due to the rain. On streets such as Sweihan-Nahel, Al Khaznah-Remah, Umm Al Oush-Al Razeen, and Al Faya-Al Khatim, among others, the speed was limited to 80 km/h.

The rain was not limited to Abu Dhabi; it also rained in several areas of the UAE on Friday. Cloud cover and lower temperatures brought residents a damp start to the weekend.

Storm Centre published a video on X demonstrating precipitation ranging from drizzle to heavy downpours along Khatm Al Shiklah road and in other parts of Al Ain.

The National Meteorological Center predicted variable cloudiness with the possibility of cumulus clouds over the eastern and southern parts, as well as afternoon rain.

Rain in the UAE during the summer is not uncommon, as it is related to the country's typical experience caused by low monsoon pressure from India. Nevertheless, the country occasionally faces more intense and destructive weather phenomena.

One of the strongest rainfall events of the season was the incident on March 25, when storms turned the usually clear sky into dense cloud cover and caused heavy downpours that flooded streets and slowed traffic in several emirates.

Al Tawiyen recorded the highest amount of precipitation at 47.9 mm, followed by Al Marjan (39.7 mm), Khor Fakkan (33.3 mm), Hatam Al Shakla (31.6 mm), and Port Khor Fakkan (28.3 mm).

The storms damaged some areas: trees were uprooted and fell onto cars, especially in Ajman. Residents joined forces to clear streets and maintain safety during the sudden flood. Emirates Airlines advised passengers to arrive at least two hours before their flight, as adverse weather conditions persisted in Dubai until March 26 and 27.
