Vintage, Vogue, and Velocity Event to Take Place at Camp Orchards, Dedicated to Fashion and the Culture of Past Decades

Next Sunday, August 30th, the Vintage, Vogue & Velocity event will be held at Camp Orchards in Hillcrest. Guests are promised an experience combining fashion, culinary delights, fast cars, and great music, while immersing themselves in an atmosphere of nostalgia.

This event pays tribute to the golden eras of classic automobiles and motorcycles, as well as fashion and music, covering the period from the 1920s to the 1980s. The exhibition will feature vintage and classic vehicles, alongside themed fashion shows inspired by each of these decades.

The entertainment program includes performances by the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra and local jazz artists BeatRoute. Food courts with themed treats will operate throughout the day, and families can pre-order picnic baskets through Camp Orchards.

Eight leading local designers were invited to create collections dedicated to each of the eight decades. The designers presented their works, reflecting the spirit of the respective period.

Karen Monk Kleinstra, a designer from South Africa, noted her fascination with the 1920s, emphasizing that this era transformed fashion into a rebellious uprising against strict Victorian rules, becoming a time of freedom and novelty.

Ludwig Bausch, a designer and creative director, returned to KwaZulu-Natal Midlands after more than fifteen years away, describing the 1930s as a golden age of glamour, where fashion emphasized the female figure using flowing drapery and silhouettes.

Sibusiso Msimang, a designer from Durban, views the 1940s as a time of duality, defined by wartime rationing and the subsequent explosion of femininity after the war. She mentioned the appearance of Christian Dior's 'New Look' in 1947 following World War II.

Silomo Ntombele, founder of Silomo Boutique, believes that the 1950s were characterized by ultra-feminine silhouettes, cinched waists, and structured tailoring, noting the popularity of voluminous dresses and narrow skirts.

Martin John Steenkamp, founder of Martin John Bespoke, draws inspiration from the revolutionary spirit of the 1960s space age, which was marked by optimism, innovation, and futurism.

Mkhize, who was born and raised in Umlazi, believes that the 1970s are associated with disco and liberation, when fashion became soft and form-fitting, celebrating natural body shapes.

Jonathon Mazue, founder of Fabroson, asserts that the 1980s were defined by confidence, individuality, and presence, when fashion utilized strong silhouettes, denim, and layering for self-expression.

Attendees are encouraged to dress in vintage clothing representing their favorite decade, for which prizes are available. The event will take place from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Camp Orchards on Inanda Road in Hillcrest. Ticket prices are R150, R100 for pensioners, and children under 12 are free; advance booking is required through Quicket.
