Siyandu Ndlovu has successfully joined the Mamelodi Sundowns squad and quickly gained popularity among club fans by fitting seamlessly into the Masandawana team. Nevertheless, coach Miguel Cardoso insists that the player must continue to improve in all aspects of the game, avoiding excessive hype.
Since joining Sundowns, Ndlovu has participated in two matches as a substitute. He looks organic within the team structure, continuing to amaze spectators with his ball control under loud applause. His high morale already makes him a valuable asset for the Brazilians, who aim to dominate the continent this season and compete for all domestic trophies.
The Brazilians' team is well-positioned to win the Vafa Vafa Cup, which would be their second in 18 years, after reaching the semi-finals. They are set to play two matches against Golden Arrows, with the first match taking place at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday afternoon (starting at 15:00).
Expectations from Ndlovu in upcoming games
Regardless of whether he starts or comes off the bench, Ndlovu is expected to play a key role in securing the team's advantage before the second round in Durban next week, especially given his deep knowledge of the Arrows team.
Referring to Siyabonga Mabena—who was also a fan favorite last season before losing consistency and falling out of favor—Cardoso emphasized that Ndlovu needs to prove he deserves more playing time. 'Our job as coaches is to create conditions for player stability,' stated Cardoso. 'Siyandu has played many PSL matches.'
He recalled last season: 'There was a lot of excitement around Mabena last season. We included him in many matches at the beginning of the season, but his lack of consistency led him to the reserve team. We will promote him again in the future. Thus, the player's level of readiness determines how many opportunities he gets. Siyandu's acquisition has been an important addition to the group, and we have high expectations.'
Without revealing whether Ndlovu will start or play for a longer duration, Cardoso reiterated the reasons for his current physical condition. 'I was very clear about him in pre-season. He got injured after a week and several training sessions, training only briefly before the first match against Chiefs,' explained Cardoso. 'His match readiness is still developing, and his team understanding is still a process. In attack, he brings magic that everyone sees, but in defense, he still has much to do.'
'We are happy to have him and want to utilize his energy. However, the long-term development of the player, both for Sundowns and Bafana Bafana, requires time. He is ready to work because he is very happy to be with us.'
Call for Humility and Competition
Cardoso called on the forward to remain humble, mentioning Mabena again, and stressed that Ndlovu needs to earn a starting spot through consistent hard work. 'We have strong competition for his position, but his creativity helps break down tight defenses,' noted Cardoso. 'We are satisfied with him, but as a young player, we need to cultivate a healthy psychological and emotional environment. It is crucial that the media and fans support this balance. At the beginning of last season, every time Mabena received the ball, everyone shouted for him to carry it, even though at those moments he should have passed it.'
