UK, Canada, and Australia classify archiving of WCK case as 'shameful'

The United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia issued a joint statement demanding that Israel conduct a swift and thorough investigation into a specific matter from over two years ago, aiming to hold those responsible accountable.

Among the fatalities recorded in an attack that occurred in the Palestinian enclave in April 2024 were citizens of these three countries. London, Ottawa, and Canberra strongly criticized the announcement by the Israeli Defense Forces on August 19, 2026, that no criminal investigation would be opened into the attack, labeling the decision as 'shameful' and unjustified.

The three governments emphasized that both the victims and their families have the right to justice and accountability for those responsible, promising to maintain pressure for answers.

Seven WCK collaborators, an organization founded by Spanish chef José Andrés, died in early April 2024 after the humanitarian convoy they were in was hit by an Israeli airstrike. The victims included three British citizens, one Canadian-American, one Pole, one Australian, and one Palestinian.

The group was supervising the partial offloading of a ship from Cyprus, which carried approximately 300 tons of food aid destined for the Gaza Strip. The deaths generated great international outrage and reignited calls to ensure the safety of humanitarian workers in Palestinian territory.

Although the Israeli army admitted various errors at different levels related to the attack, a preliminary investigation concluded on Wednesday that there was 'no reasonable suspicion of criminal conduct'. On the same day, Israeli authorities opted to archive the cases.

WCK considered this determination 'deeply painful' and 'inconsistent with reality', requesting the opening of an investigation through an 'independent commission'. The NGO argued that the Israeli Defense Forces are not capable of 'credibly investigating their own conduct'.

On Thursday, Australia had already expressed its 'indignation' with the outcome of the investigation and summoned the Israeli ambassador to the country.
