Staircases in a house serve not only as a means of moving between floors but also hold special significance from a Vastu perspective. The energetic state of a home depends on the number of steps, their placement, direction, and construction method. Because of this, uncertainty often arises when building structures regarding how the staircase should be designed; however, its placement can be made more favorable by paying attention to several details.
Regarding the direction of construction, it is considered preferable for the number of steps to be odd. When designing, it is important to consider which part of the building the staircase will be located in. According to Vastu, areas from north to east should be kept light and open, so constructing staircases in these directions is not recommended. Keeping the north and east open helps create a favorable atmosphere for the influx of positive energy into the home.
The area from east to south, and then to west, is considered more suitable. Specifically, priority should be given to staircases that start from the west and go in a southwest direction, or those that start from the east and head in a southern direction.
Another important aspect related to staircases is their turning direction: clockwise or anti-clockwise. In Vastu, the direction of the staircase's rotation is viewed in the context of energy. Clockwise staircases are associated with the water element, while anti-clockwise staircases represent the fire element. It is believed that the energy that decreases in the direction of a clockwise staircase has a lowering effect, whereas anti-clockwise staircases are considered to amplify the energy of the corresponding direction.
Therefore, the choice of staircase direction must be based not only on convenience but also on considering the building's energy zones. If a person turns to the right after a few steps on the staircase, it is considered a clockwise staircase; a staircase going left is called anti-clockwise. In zones considered negative (east-southeast, south-southwest, and west-northwest), clockwise staircases have a positive impact. Conversely, in zones considered positive, it is better to build anti-clockwise staircases to maintain balance in various energy areas of the building.
When building staircases, not only the direction but also the width, height, curves, and the starting and ending points are important. It is necessary to avoid storing unnecessary items or rarely used objects under the staircase. Maintaining cleanliness and order in the staircase's location improves the overall atmosphere of the home. Properly placed staircases help balance the home's energy system, whereas incorrectly built or placed ones can cause a Vastu defect. Therefore, when developing a plan for a new house, it is highly advisable to determine the staircase's position in advance. If changing the staircase direction in an old house is impossible, other Vastu measures corresponding to the existing structure should be considered.
