36 tons of banned Thai fish confiscated and destroyed in Nagpur

The administration conducted a major operation against the illegal cultivation of Thai fish in Nagpur, Maharashtra. As part of the joint operation, 36 tons (360 quintals) of fish were seized and subsequently destroyed using a scientific method in an 8-foot deep pit.

This incident occurred in the Chincholi (Mahadula) border area in Parshwanni district. The operation was carried out at a fish farm pond belonging to Shakil Khan Abdul Salim Khan. The detention began on Thursday morning and continued until late at night.

Five main departments participated in the campaign: the Nagpur Fisheries Department, Parshwanni Police, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), Mahavitaran (MSEDCL), and local authorities. The 36 tons of seized fish are valued at approximately 3.24 million rupees.

The Government of India and the National Green Tribunal (NGT) have completely banned the cultivation and sale of Thai fish. This fish is considered extremely harmful to the environment, aquatic ecosystem, and human health.

It reproduces rapidly even in polluted water and is a predator. It contains heavy metals and harmful chemicals, posing a risk of diseases such as cancer. Furthermore, it destroys other local fish species and aquatic organisms in the pond.
