Young Soweto Theatre Orchestra Group Celebrates Women in Music with 'Chapters of Her' Concert

The Soweto Theatre Youth Orchestra (STYO) is preparing to hold its flagship concert, 'Chapters of Her,' at the Soweto Theatre in Gibson Kente Hall. This annual concert celebrates iconic African women and is part of youth development initiatives.

The concert, which marks its second anniversary since its official launch in August 2025, is the orchestra's main event, featuring all members performing together. It is organized in honor of Women's Month and serves as a vivid testament to the theatre's mission of youth development, using music, poetry, and storytelling to support the new generation of South African artists.

The theme of the current flagship event is 'Women in Music,' highlighting the presence of an entirely female creative leadership team overseeing the performance. All orchestra musicians, both male and female, aged between 19 and 32, will take to the stage for this inspiring display of unity and growth.

'Chapters of Her' offers audiences an emotional musical journey through the lives and legacies of legendary African women who have shaped the continent's musical identity. The program features brand new orchestral arrangements dedicated to pioneers such as Miriam Makeba, Sophie Mgcina, Sylvia Mdunyeleva, and Dorothy Masuka.

These young musicians will explore the stories, struggles, and triumphs of the matriarchs of African music, blending orchestral music, spoken word art, and creative interpretation. A notable aspect of this production is the participation of distinguished industry figures who have made significant contributions to the orchestra's work.

Recognized jazz pianist Thandi Ntuli and innovative guest conductor Shewonn Plattjis, known for her signature collaboration with Red Bull, are prominently featured. Their direct involvement and mentorship create an invaluable bridge between generations, allowing beneficiaries of youth development programs to hone their skills alongside path-breaking icons.

Ntumbizivumiile Coupe, Head of Youth Outreach, noted that 'Chapters of Her' is a celebration of femininity, heritage, resilience, and artistic excellence. She added that it is an 'unparalleled opportunity for the public, media, and art lovers to witness the incredible growth, skill, and passion of Soweto's finest young musical minds as they forge their own legacy.'
