Subhman Gill works on weakness against left-arm spinners ahead of second Test match

Ahead of the second Test match against Sri Lanka, Indian captain Subhman Gill focused on addressing a vulnerability in his game that proved problematic for him in Galle. On Friday, he trained extensively at the nets of the Sinhglass Sporting Club, practicing shots against left-arm spinners.

In the first Test match, held in Galle, Gill twice fell prey to the left-arm orthodox spinner Prabhat Jayasuriya. He scored 16 runs in the first innings and only 8 in the second. Nevertheless, India won the match by 165 runs, taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. The second match is scheduled for August 23rd in Colombo.

Gill's struggles against left-arm spinners in Test matches are not new. His main difficulty stems from his inability to consistently cover the line of the ball adequately. This weakness was evident in his performance against Jayasuriya in Galle.

To date, Gill has been dismissed by left-arm spinners 11 times in 42 Test matches. This is why he made this task the center of his preparation before the Colombo match.

At the SSC nets, Gill practiced against Manav Sutara, Ravindra Jadeja, and some local bowlers. He dedicated significant time to working on various techniques and defensive shots against left-arm spin.

However, not all types of spin pose a problem for Gill. His statistics are significantly better against off-spin and leg-spin, where his aggregate average stands at around 61. Overall, his career average against all types of spinners hovers around 48.

Kuldeep Yadav was present at the nets but did not participate in any games or bowling spells. Instead, off-spinner Saransh Jain bowled several overs to Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill. He created some difficulties for Pant at certain points.

However, it would be premature to assume that Saransh Jain will play instead of Kuldeep in the second match in Colombo. In the Galle match, Kuldeep failed to make an impact, conceding 103 runs in 25 overs and taking only one wicket. This single wicket was secured thanks to a brilliant catch by Gill.

Vice-captain and opener Kel Rahul also did not attend the net sessions on Friday. Meanwhile, middle-order batsman Dhruv Jurel joined the practice slightly later and showed improvement in his game.

Both Rahul and Jurel scored impressive half-centuries in the first innings of the Galle match, contributing significantly to India's 165-run victory. Now, India's hope in Colombo is to win the series, but Gill's preparation indicates that the captain has recognized his primary technical issue and is ready to address it in the second match.

Sri Lankan cricketer hospitalized after shoulder and neck injury during Galle Test match

During the fourth day of the first Test match between India and Sri Lanka, held at the International Stadium in Galle, the hosts suffered a serious blow: experienced batsman Dinesh Chandimal became a victim of a tragic incident on the field.

While attempting to defend the boundary, Chandimal made a full dive but fell onto the ground in an extremely awkward position. He sustained an injury to his right shoulder and neck, after which he was removed from the field and sent to a local hospital for examination.

This incident occurred at the end of the fourth over-attack of India's second innings. At that time, the Sri Lankan players were trying to put pressure on the Indian batsmen and slow down the pace of the game. A fast shot hit by KL Rahul towards deep mid-wicket was traveling rapidly. The 36-year-old Chandimal, who was fielding near deep square leg, exerted all his strength to prevent the ball from going out of bounds.

Chandimal quickly ran and stopped the ball, making a full dive near the boundary cushion. Thanks to this effort, Sri Lanka managed to save two crucial runs. However, after stopping the ball, its speed did not decrease. His body lost control and rolled onto the ground, resulting in a severe impact to the upper body.

Immediately after falling, Chandimal appeared in pain. He lay on the ground for a long time, holding his head, neck, and right shoulder with his hands. Sri Lankan medical staff present on the field, as well as the team of physiotherapists, immediately provided him with assistance. After an examination on the field, Chandimal slowly got up and left the field, leaning on his arm.

Pasindu Suriybandara replaced him as a fielder. Later, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) provided information about Chandimal's injury. According to the council's report, he was examined by a physiotherapist and the team doctor, after which he was taken to the hospital for precautionary scanning.

The injury came to Chandimal at a difficult moment for Sri Lanka. He was withdrawn from the game in the first innings, having scored only 4 runs. Now the team needs to score 372 runs to win the match. Chandimal's presence in the middle order could have been very important for Sri Lanka. His experience, ability to steer an innings in difficult situations, and calm demeanor on the field could have helped the team.

Questions arising about his availability due to the injury pose an additional problem for the host team. Chandimal, a 36-year-old player, is among Sri Lanka's experienced athletes, and his experience is vital for the team during the current ICC World Test Championship cycle.

In the absence of Bumrah, Gill prepared a backup plan: possible use of Prasad with Siraj

India's captain Shubman Gill indicated before the start of the first Test against Sri Lanka, which begins on Saturday, that experienced Mohammed Siraj might take the new ball alongside the known Prasad.

Nevertheless, he called the choice between the young and experienced fast bowler Gurnoor Barar and Prasad a 'difficult decision'. In this match, India could field three left-arm spinners: Ravindra Jadeja, Manav Sutara, and wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav. Siraj's place in the fast bowling attack is practically secured, while among the other three options are Prasad, Gurnoor, and Akib Nabi, whose chances are currently considered slim.

Gill noted that although Gurnoor stands at six feet five inches, Prasad is slightly shorter but possesses experience from 7 Tests and 25 wickets. Before the match, Gill stated: 'Gurnoor plays the old ball excellently and can achieve good pace and bounce. But Prasad has also performed well recently, as we saw in the practice match. So it is a difficult decision.'

With Jasprit Bumrah absent due to a knee injury, this series presents a major opportunity for players like Prasad and Gurnoor to prove their worth. Gill emphasized: 'Bumrah is not here, but it is a chance for someone else to take responsibility. We just need to understand the tempo of the game.'

In the batting lineup, left-handed Devdutt Padikkal is expected to take the number three position instead of Sai Sudarshan. Furthermore, despite poor performance in recent Tests, Duruv Jurel is likely to get another chance in the middle order.

Highlighting confidence in young players, Gill said: 'Players develop themselves; we must give them time. Some players need a little time.' He also refuted rumors of a communication breakdown between the team management and the Bangalore High Performance Centre regarding Sai Sudarshan's physical condition. Gill replied: 'We communicate with them constantly. Unfortunately, Sai Sudarshan has not been able to improve his form as we wanted. In Test cricket, we cannot take risks, but we have complete faith in our 15 players.'

Gill, who took over the leadership of the team almost a year ago, stated that he now feels confident in this role. In his view, the series against Sri Lanka gives India a chance to return to the World Test Championship race. He added: 'I feel comfortable in the role of captain now. Our goal is to stay in the World Test Championship final race. To do this, we need to win 6 or 7 Tests, so we want to start with this.'

The first match against Sri Lanka will also be historic for Indian cricket, as it will be India's 600th Test match since 1932. Gill remarked: 'Being the captain of your country in the 600th Test is an honour, and doing it on Independence Day makes it even more special.'

A confrontation is expected in Galle between the team led by Shubman Gill and spinner Prabhat Jayasuriya

The start of the two-match test series between India and Sri Lanka is scheduled for August 15. The first match will take place in Galle from August 15 to 19, and the second in Colombo from August 23 to 27.

The pitch in Galle once again presents a serious challenge for Indian batsmen. However, while in 2008 India faced the mysterious spin bowling of Ajanta Mendis, this time the team led by Shubman Gill will confront the spin of Prabhat Jayasuriya.

Approximately eighteen years ago, in 2008, the second Test played in Galle remains one of the memorable moments in the history of Indian cricket. Back then, Ajanta Mendis caused concern among players worldwide with his 'mystical spin bowling,' but Virender Sehwag managed to largely neutralize the power of his delivery.

In that match, Virender Sehwag batted through the first half of the innings without being dismissed, scoring 201*, and added another 50 runs in the second innings. In both innings, Sehwag actively attacked Mendis. Despite Ajanta Mendis taking 10 wickets in that match, no Indian batsman other than Sehwag could withstand his spin. India won that match by a margin of 170 runs.

Now, in 2026, history has brought us back to Galle. Sri Lanka's main strength is Prabhat Jayasuriya. The left-arm spinner has extremely dangerous statistics in Galle: he took 81 wickets in 11 matches at this venue, demonstrating his influence and control over the field.

As the match progresses, the pitch in Galle becomes more favorable for spinners. Consequently, Shubman Gill faces a serious test for players such as Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Kell Rule, and the Indian middle order.

India hopes that its batsmen will approach the game against the spinners aggressively and positively. If the Indian players can find their rhythm against Jayasuriya early on, a repetition of the Galle history might be possible.

In 2008, Sehwag managed to break Mendis's mystical spin bowling. Now the question arises: will Shubman Gill's team be able to achieve similar success in the test against Prabhat Jayasuriya's spin?
