Ahead of the second Test match against Sri Lanka, Indian captain Subhman Gill focused on addressing a vulnerability in his game that proved problematic for him in Galle. On Friday, he trained extensively at the nets of the Sinhglass Sporting Club, practicing shots against left-arm spinners.
In the first Test match, held in Galle, Gill twice fell prey to the left-arm orthodox spinner Prabhat Jayasuriya. He scored 16 runs in the first innings and only 8 in the second. Nevertheless, India won the match by 165 runs, taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. The second match is scheduled for August 23rd in Colombo.
Gill's struggles against left-arm spinners in Test matches are not new. His main difficulty stems from his inability to consistently cover the line of the ball adequately. This weakness was evident in his performance against Jayasuriya in Galle.
To date, Gill has been dismissed by left-arm spinners 11 times in 42 Test matches. This is why he made this task the center of his preparation before the Colombo match.
At the SSC nets, Gill practiced against Manav Sutara, Ravindra Jadeja, and some local bowlers. He dedicated significant time to working on various techniques and defensive shots against left-arm spin.
However, not all types of spin pose a problem for Gill. His statistics are significantly better against off-spin and leg-spin, where his aggregate average stands at around 61. Overall, his career average against all types of spinners hovers around 48.
Kuldeep Yadav was present at the nets but did not participate in any games or bowling spells. Instead, off-spinner Saransh Jain bowled several overs to Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill. He created some difficulties for Pant at certain points.
However, it would be premature to assume that Saransh Jain will play instead of Kuldeep in the second match in Colombo. In the Galle match, Kuldeep failed to make an impact, conceding 103 runs in 25 overs and taking only one wicket. This single wicket was secured thanks to a brilliant catch by Gill.
Vice-captain and opener Kel Rahul also did not attend the net sessions on Friday. Meanwhile, middle-order batsman Dhruv Jurel joined the practice slightly later and showed improvement in his game.
Both Rahul and Jurel scored impressive half-centuries in the first innings of the Galle match, contributing significantly to India's 165-run victory. Now, India's hope in Colombo is to win the series, but Gill's preparation indicates that the captain has recognized his primary technical issue and is ready to address it in the second match.
