Bangladesh Cricket Board suspends BPL T20 league due to financial losses and disputes

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has decided to temporarily suspend its largest domestic T20 tournament, the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), for the current year. The Chairman of the BCB, Tamim Iqbal, confirmed this decision on Thursday (August 20), attributing it to persistent financial losses, non-compliance with rules by franchises, and administrative issues.

Launched in 2012, the BPL is Bangladesh's leading franchise cricket league. However, in recent seasons, the tournament has been at the center of economic and administrative disagreements. Instead of continuing the tournament in its previous format, the BCB intends to reform its entire model. Tamim Iqbal stated that over the past two years, the tournament has generated approximately $3.3 million for the board (equivalent to about 31.58 crore rupees), while the Bangladeshi newspaper 'Prothom Alo' estimates this amount at 400 million Bangladeshi taka.

Tamim Iqbal emphasized that the BPL is an excellent product that generates significant interest and can develop further with proper organization. He noted that franchise cricket should generate profit for the BCB, not losses. According to him, it is not advisable to run the tournament at a loss until the problems are resolved.

The cricket board has faced difficulties in collecting debts from several franchises, and issues have arisen regarding adherence to league rules and bank guarantees. These complications have forced the BCB to review the existing tournament structure.

The league's problems are not solely financial. Following an anti-corruption investigation in May, one player and several team officials were suspended by the BCB on charges of violating gambling-related rules. This raised questions about the reliability of the entire tournament. Furthermore, a conflict between players and the board last season directly impacted matches. Local cricketers boycotted games in protest against comments made by BCB official Najmul Islam regarding the players and their economic significance, which necessitated the postponement of many fixtures.

The biggest impact of the league's absence this year may be felt by local cricketers. Tamim Iqbal acknowledged their disappointment but stressed the priority of reforms. He said: 'If I were a player, I would also be upset. But this tournament must be conducted in a way that the BCB can be proud of. Are we proud of what happened in the last few years? Perhaps not.'
