Crisis emerges around India-Bangladesh series; BCB chief Tamim Iqbal reports date changes

The situation regarding the planned limited-overs series between India and Bangladesh remains uncertain. Negotiations are currently ongoing between both cricket boards concerning the timing of the matches. The President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), Tamim Iqbal, has stated the possibility of some changes to the series dates, meaning the tour scheduled to begin on September 3 could be postponed again.

India is set to play three One Day International (ODI) matches and three Twenty20 International (T20I) matches during its visit to Bangladesh. This series was previously scheduled for August 2025 but was then postponed by a year, with new dates announced for September 2026. However, despite September approaching, official confirmation of this tour from the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) has not been received, which sustains the atmosphere of uncertainty surrounding the series.

During a press conference in Dhaka, BCB President Tamim Iqbal stated that both boards are in constant discussions regarding the India series, and he indicated that date changes are possible. Tamim noted that both boards are discussing the India series, and minor shifts forward or backward in the schedule may occur.

The first ODI match is scheduled for September 3, but due to the lack of official confirmation from the BCCI, the Bangladesh Cricket Board finds it difficult to fully finalize its internal calendar.

The uncertainty surrounding the series also affects Bangladesh's domestic cricket calendar. The BCB announced the schedule for a tournament featuring U-17, U-19, and U-23 level players. This tournament is scheduled from August 28 to September 9 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur. Consequently, it directly overlaps with the proposed dates for the Indian visit. Nevertheless, Tamim Iqbal assured that if the India series is finally approved, the domestic tournament will not be an obstacle. He added that although the tournament takes place in Mirpur, it can be moved to the Basundhara ground if necessary, and the domestic schedule will be adjusted according to the dates of the India series.

This series between India and Bangladesh has had a long journey. It was initially supposed to take place in August 2025. Later, the series was postponed by a year, and it was then planned for September 2026. According to the new schedule, India is set to play three ODI matches and three T20 International matches in Bangladesh. The matches will be held in Dhaka and Chattogram, but now there is again a possibility of date changes. As September 3 approaches, the absence of public confirmation from the BCCI raises further questions.

At the beginning of this year, tension was also observed between the cricket boards of India and Bangladesh. Discussions about sporting relations between the two countries intensified following the Mustafizur Rahman case related to the Kolkata Knight Riders. The situation worsened when Bangladesh refused to travel to India for the T20 World Cup. However, after Tamim became president of the BCB, signs of easing relations between the boards have appeared. Tamim visited India earlier this month, and there were previous reports of his trip to the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. In light of this, negotiations between the two boards regarding the India-Bangladesh series are viewed as an important step towards improving relations.

Besides the India series, the Bangladesh Cricket Board faces another major issue related to the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Tamim Iqbal hinted that holding the BPL this year might be canceled. The board is currently engaged in resolving economic and administrative issues related to the tournament. Tamim stated directly that he does not want to hold the BPL in its current format and considers it unlikely that the tournament will take place this year.

BCB's problems with the BPL are not only administrative but also financial. Over two seasons, the board incurred losses of approximately 400 million Bangladeshi Taka, equivalent to about 310 million Indian Rupees. The BCB is now working on settling issues related to debts owed to franchises and bank guarantees. Tamim emphasized that until the financial model of the BPL is corrected, there is no point in rushing another season. He is willing to provide as much time as needed—be it 6, 12, or 24 months.

After defeat to Bangladesh, Australia faced criticism: Mark Waugh called it the biggest upset in history

An event occurred on the field in Darwin that probably no cricket fan expected. Bangladesh defeated Australia by nine wickets, starting the Test series with a triumph.

Thanks to this convincing victory, Bangladesh made history. The Australian team proved ineffective in all aspects of the game. Following this crushing defeat, prominent Australian cricketers became angry. Former captain Ricky Ponting, Mark Waugh, and Matthew Hayden sharply criticized the team management, casting doubt on it.

Former great Australian batter Mark Waugh characterized this defeat as the most significant upset in the history of Australian cricket. He stated that he had never seen such a major upset in his career. Although the loss to the West Indies at the Gabba three or four years ago was a serious blow, the current match surpasses it in significance. Furthermore, the Bangladesh team played without its two leading bowlers—Nahid Rana and Shoriful Islam—but still managed to overcome the strong Australian team.

Former captain Ricky Ponting called this defeat extremely shameful. In Ponting's opinion, the time has come for the Australian team to start thinking about the future. He stated directly that Australia needs to find a new opening batsman and also make changes at the number three position. Although Ponting was initially not in favor of many squad changes, this decisive defeat completely changed his point of view.

Matthew Hayden also raised the issue of the Australian batting failure and advised sending Travis Head back to the fifth position. After the defeat, captain Pat Cummins highly praised the Bangladesh team, acknowledging that the visiting side performed better in every aspect of the game. Before the second match of the series, the Australian team is under pressure, and serious changes in the lineup are expected following the firm stance of the legends.

Bangladesh achieves historic victory over Australia in first Test match in Darwin

The first Test match between Australia and Bangladesh took place at Marara Oval in Darwin. Bangladesh managed to achieve a historic victory, winning by a margin of nine wickets. The Bangladesh team reached the target score of 57 runs during the second session of the fourth day.

The main heroes of Bangladesh's victory were fast bowler Hasan Mahmud and all-rounder Mehdi Hasan Miraz. Mahmud took a total of nine wickets in this match. Miraz scored 65 runs and also claimed five wickets.

This is Bangladesh's first victory over Australia on their home ground. Previously, Bangladesh had lost two matches against Australia, which were played in Australia during the 2003 tour. Thus, Bangladesh secured its second victory over Australia in Test matches.

Before this, the Bangladesh team had defeated the Australian team in a match in Mirpur in August 2017 by a margin of 20 runs. In total, seven Test matches have been played between Bangladesh and Australia: Australia won five matches, and Bangladesh won two.

The second match of the series is scheduled for August 22 in Mackay.

On the fourth day, Australia started its second innings with a score of 161/4. Mehdi Hasan Miraz already put Australia in a difficult position in the first session, dismissing Alex Carey (30 runs), Hugh Webster (5 runs), and Pat Cummins (8 runs).

Despite the collapse of wickets, Cameron Green remained on the field. He scored 104 runs off 201 balls, using 4 fours and one six. This was Green's third century in his career. Mitchell Starc (18 runs) also tried to stay on the field, but Taskin Ahmed ended his innings. Cameron Green was dismissed by Hasan Mahmud with a bowled delivery.

After this, Mehdi Hasan Miraz dismissed Nathan Lyon (15 runs) via LBW, reducing the Australian team's innings to 284 runs. Miraz took five wickets in the second innings, and Mahmud got three wickets. Taskin Ahmed and Taijul Islam took one wicket each.

It is worth noting that Australia, having won the toss, batted first and scored only 198 runs in the first innings. Steve Smith made the biggest contribution, scoring 71 runs. From Bangladesh's side, Hasan Mahmud took six wickets, while Ibadat Hossain and Taskin Ahmed each took two wickets.

In response, Bangladesh scored 426 runs in its first innings, gaining a large advantage of 228 runs based on the first innings. Opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim demonstrated excellent play, scoring 101 runs. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto (84 runs) and Mehdi Hasan Miraz (65 runs) also showed useful batting performances.
