How to fix low water pressure in the shower without a plumber using an inexpensive remedy

If water is dripping from the shower or the flow has become weak, it is not necessary to call a plumber. The problem often lies in mineral deposits, such as limescale, which accumulate in the small holes of the showerhead.

With hard water, the mineral content, such as calcium and magnesium, is high. Over time, these minerals settle in the holes of the showerhead and pipes, preventing normal water flow. Although people sometimes use baking soda or vinegar, these remedies may be insufficiently effective. A more effective solution is to use citric acid.

Why do deposits form in shower holes?

The higher the concentration of calcium and magnesium in the water, the faster such minerals can settle on the showerhead and in the pipes. This process gradually clogs the small holes, which directly affects the water stream: it stops coming out evenly, and a decrease in pressure is felt.

Try citric acid instead of soda and vinegar

To remove the white layer of mineral deposits formed due to hard water, citric acid can be used. It helps loosen these mineral deposits, simplifying the cleaning process.

How to clean a showerhead

If the showerhead cannot be removed, there is an alternative method. You need to mix citric acid with warm water into a liquid solution and place this mixture in a plastic bag. Then, wrap this bag around the showerhead so that all its holes contact the solution. After soaking, remove the bag and thoroughly rinse the showerhead with clean water.

It is important to understand that one cleaning may not be enough. If the showerhead is not cleaned for a long time, the mineral layer can reappear. Therefore, it is recommended to clean not only when the pressure drops but also regularly.

According to experts, it is useful to clean the showerhead at least once a month, wipe the surface after use, and periodically check the holes. If the water in the house is very hard, it is worth considering installing a filter or a scale inhibitor system.

Do not immediately buy a new showerhead or call a plumber upon seeing a weak flow. Often, the problem is just the accumulation of mineral deposits in the holes. Regular maintenance and checking of the showerhead allow maintaining good water pressure for a long time.
