Kia to introduce new hybrid models Sonet and Carens for the Indian market by 2029

Following the introduction of E20 gasoline models, many consumers have experienced issues with fuel consumption. In response, companies have begun developing solutions, and various hybrid vehicles may appear in the Indian market soon. Kia Motor is also actively working in this area.

At an investor event held in 2026, Kia President and CEO, Cho Soon-song, confirmed the release of two new hybrid Kia models. He stated that the Sonet and Carens Clavis will be available in India with a hybrid powertrain by 2029.

Furthermore, the company announced the launch of a locally developed B-segment crossover for India. Song stated: 'Starting in 2027, we will release hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) variants for local models such as Sonet, Carens, and Seltos. We will also launch a locally developed B-segment electric crossover.'

The Kia Sonet is the company's most affordable model. The next generation of this car is planned for release next year. The company may introduce this model with a hybrid powertrain in 2028 or 2029. Currently, the technical specifications of the hybrid version have not been disclosed. Reports indicate that Kia is developing a hybrid support powertrain for this vehicle.

The second generation of the Sonet will be built on the K1 platform, which is currently used for the new Venue and Seltos models. This platform supports not only hybrid operation but also the latest electronics and electrical architecture, as well as over-the-air (OTA) updates and remote diagnostics.

The new platform has also resolved the rear seat space issue. By 2029, the company may also release the Carens Clavis with a hybrid powertrain. Currently, this MPV is available with internal combustion gasoline engines, turbocharged gasoline engines, diesel engines, and a fully electric powertrain.
