New rule for SIM cards introduced from August 24: limit on the number of connections per person

The Subscriber Identity Module (SIM card) is installed in smartphones, and without it, telecommunication services cannot be used. Changes to the rules regarding SIM cards come into force from August 24, and you may be refused when purchasing a new SIM card.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), operating under the aegis of the Indian government, has begun tightening control over mobile connections. The new rule will take effect from August 24, according to which companies will not issue SIM cards to individuals who have already reached the established limit of SIM cards in their name.

For example, if a person has exhausted the limit of SIM cards set by all telecommunication companies combined, they may be prohibited from receiving a new SIM card.

According to this rule, a person can purchase a total of 9 SIM cards under their Aadhaar card, and this rule applies to most states in the country. However, in regions such as Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, and northeastern states, the maximum number of mobile connections is limited to six.

Operators must check how many SIM cards are already registered in the name of the person who wants to purchase a new SIM card. If the established limit is reached, a new SIM card will not be issued.

Additionally, users can independently check the number of issued SIM cards through the official government website. To check SIM card numbers, you can use the Official Sanchar Sadhi and TAFCOP portals.

If you are not using any SIM card, you can report this through the TAFCOP portal or submit a request to deactivate it.
