Max Verstappen renews contract with Red Bull until 2030, ending departure rumors

Max Verstappen has decided to remain with the Formula 1 team Red Bull until the end of 2030. This agreement was signed on Thursday, the 20th, shortly before the Dutch Grand Prix, an event held at home. The contract extension increases the bond by two seasons from the original end date in 2028, putting an end to months of speculation about a possible move to Mercedes or McLaren.

The previous contract included clauses tied to the team's performance, which could have facilitated an early exit. This possibility gained momentum due to the Austrian team's decreased performance during the first year of the new Formula 1 technical regulations. After eleven races, Red Bull is the only team in the top 4 group that has not yet secured a victory in 2026 and currently holds fourth place in the Constructors' Championship.

Verstappen has been part of the Red Bull structure since 2014, when he joined the brand's junior driver program. He was promoted to the main team in 2016, mid-season, and achieved his first victory immediately upon debut at the Spanish GP. Since then, he has accumulated 71 victories, four consecutive world drivers' titles between 2021 and 2024, in addition to helping the team lift two constructors' trophies.

In a statement released by Red Bull, the Dutch driver declared: 'I've always said it: the team is like a second family to me, and I feel very at home.' He added that 'continuing this journey with the same team I competed for throughout my career is truly special and something I always wanted to do.'

The announcement occurred during the week of the last Dutch GP, which will be held in Zandvoort. For the driver, this weekend takes on an even more symbolic character for both him and local fans.

The renewal happens during a period of transition for Red Bull. The team is under the leadership of Laurent Mekies, who was promoted to boss after Christian Horner's departure in July. Furthermore, this year, Red Bull Ford Powertrains debuts as an engine manufacturer in collaboration with the American automaker.

Laurent Mekies praised the extension, calling it 'fantastic news,' and commented: 'Few partnerships in sport achieve what Max and this team have achieved.' He emphasized that Verstappen's impact on the team and on Red Bull's motorsport history has been transformative.

At the Dutch GP, Verstappen reaches sixth place in the drivers' championship, totaling 109 points, trailing the leader Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes by 110 points. However, his recent performance has been more stable: the Dutchman finished second in Hungary and Austria, and third in Belgium and Canada. The new contract grants him four seasons to try and reposition Red Bull in the title race.
