Cardpocalypse available for free on the Epic Games Store during the week of August 20 to 27

The Epic Games Store makes at least one free title available for download weekly, and this week the indie card game Cardpocalypse is available between August 20th and 27th.

The core gameplay revolves around a card game called Mega Mutant Power Pets. This turn-based combat system allows the player to perform attacks, place creatures on the field, or use special cards each round. Both card types and actions have a cost in 'Pet Food,' which starts at one point but increases progressively with each turn, allowing for the use of more powerful cards or more units per turn.

When attacking, the mechanism follows the classic pattern of card games: dealing damage and taking damage in return. The card game always begins with a champion, who gains more power and a special ability upon reaching 15 health points. Each creature also has health and attack attributes, some of which feature unique abilities, such as attacking immediately after being placed on the field or preventing other creatures from being attacked while they are active.

Furthermore, there are mutations that influence the next creature added to the board. Outside the card game mechanic, the player can explore the environment by walking and interacting with various characters through dialogue options. There is also the possibility of discovering new cards, building your own deck, and trading cards with certain NPCs, all while the story progresses, visually reminiscent of the card game craze of the 90s and 2000s, a phenomenon that resonated in Brazil, driven by the popularization of anime like Yu-Gi-Oh! and its card game.

The narrative of Cardpocalypse presents a humorous and light tone, evident in cards such as Cat³ (a cube-shaped cat) or the hot dog, which is literally a fire dog. This type of joke is recurrent throughout the game, extending to the dialogues.

Regarding graphics, they are quite caricatured, resembling more internet memes and comics. While this does not imply poor quality, this style may not appeal to everyone. A positive point is that the game includes dubbed dialogues, even if only in English, which aids in player immersion.

Cardpocalypse is recommended for those who appreciate card games, especially nostalgic ones from the peak of card games in the late 90s and early 2000s. It is also an excellent choice for independent game enthusiasts, particularly those with unusual, eccentric, or unique styles.
