Supreme Court asks CBSE to consider deferring trilingual policy for sixth graders

On Thursday, the Supreme Court approached the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) with a request to consider postponing the implementation of the trilingual policy for sixth-grade students until next year. The Court noted that infrastructure and teaching staff need to be strengthened by that time. Under this policy, students are required to choose two mother tongues.

Furthermore, the Supreme Court indicated that a final decision must be made considering the historical perspective of the English language and its degree of entrenchment in Indian society. Justice Bagchi emphasized that although the policy remains with the CBSE, the constitutional aspect requires determining whether English is a native or non-native language. He added that if this issue is resolved, many rough edges can be significantly smoothed out.
