Springboks fullback Damian Willemse cautions against over-relying on past achievements as the team prepares for a new battle against the All Blacks in the greatest rugby rivalry. He emphasizes that the upcoming match is an entirely different test and does not want to place too much importance on the previous victory over the All Blacks.
When the teams meet in the opening match of the Greatest Rugby Rivalry on Saturday, it is known that almost a year has passed since their last encounter in the Rugby World Cup in Wellington. Although they won then with a score of 43:10, the New Zealand squad has undergone a coaching change and will arrive with new plans, requiring the Springboks to focus solely on themselves in preparation for the new confrontation.
Despite the intense anticipation for the start of the game, players view participation in the week of matches and the tour as a great honor. Willemse stated: 'We want to win the first match. The team is truly focused, and we had a good training week. However, we cannot rely too much on our last match against them. This is a different test, and several months have passed since our last game. We will have to be sharp and precise in our plan, as well as as individual players.'
Willemse also highly praised All Blacks flanker Ruben Law, who is set to start the first test against the Springboks. Law is considered an outstanding player capable of passing, kicking, and running, possessing all the necessary arsenal. He had an impressive campaign in Super Rugby and will play in the squad alongside his halfback Cam Roigara and inside center Jordie Barrett.
'We had to study his profile and followed his development. He is capable of igniting anything for the All Blacks, as he has demonstrated. He is also a very accurate kicker with a balanced head. He hasn't shown any weaknesses, if I can call them that. This will be a great test against world-class players.'
Damian de Allende will receive his 100th Springboks test jersey against the All Blacks in the opening match of the Greatest Rugby Rivalry on Saturday at Ellis Park stadium, and Pieter-Steph du Toit is appointed captain. According to Willemse, De Allende is a very reserved person, but he possesses qualities that help the team gain momentum.
These two played together at the beginning of their careers at Stormers and achieved many successes, including winning two World Cups with the Springboks. Willemse noted: 'He never accepts praise, but he has often taken responsibility in important games for us. He is always ready to train or play. I don't remember him missing a training session or a match. He is a world-class player. I am very proud of him, and I am sure his hometown of Milnerton is too. He joins an elite club.'
