Japanese researchers succeeded in changing the sex of mouse embryos, converting them from male to female. This process was achieved by removing the Y chromosome at very early stages of embryonic development.
To implement this method, the researchers applied CRISPR-Cas9 technology. Furthermore, they combined this method with an improved somatic cell nuclear transfer technique. Thanks to this comprehensive approach, they managed to obtain fertile offspring that possess both sexes, using exclusively genetic material from males.
