The biometric system installed at the border crossing points of the Russian Federation has recorded approximately 70 thousand foreign citizens who are prohibited from entering the country. This information was provided by the official representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, Irina Volk.
According to the statement from the Ministry of Internal Affairs representative, approximately 14 million people have passed through since the start of the experiment to collect biometric data of foreign citizens through equipped checkpoints. This experiment began on December 1, 2024, and is being implemented at Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, and Zhukovsky airports in Moscow, as well as at the Mashtakovo road checkpoint located in the Orenburg region. Starting May 1, 2025, Vnukovo International Airport will be connected to this initiative.
A biometric system created by the Moscow government operates at these facilities. It ensures citizen identification at the time of passing border control by analyzing photographs and fingerprints.
Expansion of System Use
In June, similar systems were introduced at another eleven checkpoints. These checkpoints are located in St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Yekaterinburg, as well as in the Altai Krai, Irkutsk, Kurgan, Novosibirsk, Saratov, Orenburg, and Omsk regions. The system performs a dual function: it not only collects data but also allows for the identification of individuals who changed their registration details after receiving an entry ban and attempted to cross the border again.
