The government of Uttar Pradesh is taking steps to strengthen the education system and support children attending primary and secondary schools. As part of these efforts, the government is providing direct financial assistance to the bank accounts of approximately 1.18 crore students since the start of the academic year.
The funds are provided through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism to children from the first to the eighth grade who study under the Department of Basic Education. This money is intended for purchasing uniforms, shoes and socks, sweaters, school backpacks, and stationery.
Because the money is deposited directly into parents' accounts, the possibility of intermediary interference has been completely eliminated, which has increased the level of accountability in the system.
The first phase of this initiative was launched by Uttar Pradesh Minister Yogi Adityanath on July 8, 2026, in Varanasi. In the first phase, funds were transferred to the parents of approximately 1.10 crore students. Subsequently, the second phase covered another 7.83 lakh students who benefited from this program.
The government's main focus is on ensuring that children have all necessary items at the very beginning of the academic period. Timely receipt of uniforms, backpacks, and stationery helps boost children's self-confidence and motivates them to attend school regularly. The departmental level constantly monitors the entire process to ensure that no eligible beneficiary is missed.
The State Minister for Basic Education (Independent Portfolio), Sandeep Singh, stated that the direct transfer via DBT has significantly strengthened transparency and accountability. The government's goal is not only to provide financial aid but also to ensure equal opportunities for every child. The government is working to ensure that financial difficulties do not become an obstacle to education for any child, and that everyone receives the necessary resources in a timely manner.
