In the first test match between Sri Lanka and India, held in Galle, India won by a margin of 165 runs, taking a 1-0 lead in the series. Following this match, former Indian player Ajinkya Rahane shared his thoughts on two prominent players, Kuldeep Yadav and Manav Sutara, in a video published on his YouTube channel.
Kuldeep Yadav managed to take only one wicket across the entire match, bowling 25 overs and conceding 103 runs. Rahane noted that Kuldeep did not show his best form; he appeared uncertain and lacked his usual rhythm. In Rahane's opinion, Kuldeep most needs the team's support at this moment.
Rahane stated that he wishes Kuldeep Yadav more confidence, emphasizing that the team currently needs to support him. He reminded that Kuldeep took wickets at critical moments. Acknowledging that he was not given enough opportunities to play, Rahane added that such things sometimes happen in the game, and rhythm can be absent. However, if the conditions remain the same, he would like Kuldeep to be supported, as he is a bowler capable of deciding the match, and he will show results if the team gives him support.
On the other hand, young left-arm spinner Manav Sutara demonstrated outstanding performance, taking four and six wickets respectively in the first and second innings, totaling 10 wickets. This result was a significant factor in India's victory. Rahane highly praised Sutara, noting that he was given a chance due to good performance in the previous test.
Rahane continued that Manav deserved a chance given his excellent performance in the last test. His deliveries were magnificent, and his confidence was evident. Particularly impressive was taking a wicket from the very first ball. It is crucial for a bowler to hit the right spot from the first delivery, which requires either great experience or complete belief in one's abilities. This ball was unplayable. Subtle changes in the speed of his deliveries were observed in the first and second innings, indicating his thoughtful approach to the game—a great ability. The start was brilliant, but now it is important to enjoy this success while analyzing how to improve the game in the future.
Rahane also gave his opinion regarding the composition of the Indian team for the second test. He suggested that any decision on changes would depend on the pitch condition. Usually, Sri Lanka favors spin-friendly conditions. A change might occur if the pitch has seven-way bounce and little grass. However, if the conditions are similar to Galle, there should be no changes in the squad.
He concluded that it depends on the conditions. Generally, spin-friendly conditions are expected in Sri Lanka. Many years ago, when they played at SSC, there were seven-way conditions. Therefore, it will be necessary to see whether three spinners or three pacers are needed. If the conditions are seven-way and the pitch is not dry but has some grass, a small change might happen. Otherwise, no changes are anticipated for the next test. If the conditions are the same as in Galle, he believes the squad will remain unchanged.
