Gauteng is utilizing major international sporting events, such as the upcoming rugby match between the Springboks and New Zealand, to boost its tourism appeal and attract visitors from around the world. This strategy is aimed at showcasing the province's diverse offerings beyond traditional attractions.
The forthcoming rugby contest between the Springboks and New Zealand at Ellis Park Stadium is positioned as one of the main sporting events drawing international attention to South Africa. The rivalry between these teams, combined with strong performances by South African teams internationally, has strengthened the country's reputation as a destination for sports tourism, according to a representative from Gauteng Tourism, Barbara Gaoganedive.
In an interview with IOL ahead of the match, he noted that guests attending sporting events can extend their stay to explore other tourist offerings, including reserves, business events, and visits to friends and relatives. He emphasized that 'the province's tourism strategy is largely people-focused, concentrating on activities and experiences rather than traditional sights like mountains, beaches, and wildlife.'
Visitors
Gaoganedive stated that Gauteng's main foreign markets are New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and the United States, while China and India are among the top 10 foreign markets in the province. A significant portion of visitors also comes from the rest of the African continent. He added that 'the province is seeing growth in visitors from America, especially the US, as well as from Australia, which is largely driven by the development of sports tourism.'
Incentive-Driven Programmes
The province is also recording an increase in corporate incentive programmes, where high-performing teams receive trips to locations coinciding with major sporting events. Successful events, such as LIV Golf in Johannesburg earlier this year, and Soweto Derby, have provided opportunities to attract these visitors. Major sporting events are also linked to plans to revitalize Johannesburg's city centre. Events like Walk the Talk and Sunday strolls along Ellis Park's main street are part of efforts to revitalize Johannesburg's central business district.
Initiatives related to public transport, rail services, and Gautrain services are also aimed at improving the overall experience for fans and passengers. These include integrated tickets and transport options designed to help reduce road congestion. Hosting major international sporting events also gives Gauteng an opportunity to promote South Africa globally and counter negative perceptions of the destination. Gaoganedive concluded that 'the strategy is also aimed at encouraging South Africans to host foreign visitors and sports fans, using major events to showcase the province as a place combining sport, business, and leisure.'
