Tea is an integral part of life in Indian homes, whether it's the start of the day or a way to relieve evening fatigue. When preparing various types of tea, it is crucial to pay attention to the quality of the tea leaves themselves.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has developed a very simple and effective method to check tea leaves for impurities. Doubts about counterfeiting often arise in sales, and now tiny iron particles (Iron Filings) can be found in tea leaves, causing serious concern.
These metallic particles can enter the tea either during equipment processing or as a result of intentional contamination. To detect such particles in tea leaves, a simple test using a magnet can be performed right at home, which requires little effort or time.
According to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), a magnetic test should be conducted to check for the presence of iron particles in tea leaves.
First, pour a small amount of dry tea leaves onto a clean plate or white paper, distributing them so that a thick layer is not formed and all particles are clearly visible. Then, carefully pass a clean magnet over the tea leaves, without pressing down or mixing them. The magnet should be held close to the surface and passed across the entire area. If there are fine, dark particles in the tea leaves, they will be attracted to the magnet and stick to it.
If no particles stick when bringing the magnet near, it means that this test did not reveal the presence of magnetic particles in the tea leaves. However, if small particles remain on the magnet, it may indicate the possibility of iron particles being present in the tea leaves. Nevertheless, it must be understood that only based on this home magnetic test cannot one definitively declare the tea leaves completely pure or impure; it is merely a simple, preliminary home check method.
The presence of unwanted metallic particles in any food product is a serious issue. Therefore, when purchasing tea leaves, it is necessary to carefully examine the integrity of the packaging, labels, markings, and information related to food safety. It is best to avoid buying tea leaves that have been open for a long time or lack labeling. Ingestion of iron particles into the body can pose a significant threat to health.
