Dandruff is a common scalp issue, and many people use various types of shampoos to prevent it. However, the question arises whether dandruff can be eliminated solely with shampoo, and in which cases a doctor should be consulted. Experts note that dandruff is often ignored as a minor problem.
For mild dandruff, significant relief can be achieved with a suitable anti-dandruff shampoo. When choosing a shampoo, one should focus not on the scent or brand, but on the presence of active ingredients. No shampoo guarantees complete eradication of dandruff; the product's composition must first be studied.
Dr. Rashmi Sharma, senior consultant at the Dermatology Department of Fortis Hospital in Gurugram, provided information on this topic. She indicated that components such as ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, zinc pyrithione, and salicylic acid help control dandruff. It is important not just to apply the shampoo to the hair, but to thoroughly apply it to the scalp and leave it on for several minutes. With regular use, an improvement in itching and white flakes can be noticed.
Nevertheless, not every scalp problem is dandruff, and shampoo is not always effective for every issue.
Dr. Rashmi emphasized that a specialist consultation is necessary if severe itching, redness, or sensitivity of the scalp is observed, thick scaling occurs, the problem frequently recurs, or hair loss occurs. In such situations, an anti-dandruff shampoo alone is insufficient, and only proper diagnosis can ensure adequate treatment.
