US President Donald Trump stated in his declaration that Iran will face 'the most crushing economic operation in history,' and any country trading with Iran 'will incur huge economic consequences.'
In a post on Truth Social, Trump warned Iran, noting that it failed to take advantage of numerous opportunities to strike deals, and as a result, will be subjected to an 'economic war and isolation of unprecedented scale.' He added that 'any country allowing its financial institutions, enterprises, airports, or state structures to provide any support to Iran will itself face HUGE economic consequences.'
Trump demanded an immediate halt to practices such as 'oil smuggling, swap lines, money transfers, exchange offices, ship registries, shell companies,' stating that this would become an 'ECONOMIC DAY,' and called on allies to support the United States of America to isolate and defeat the threat from Iran.
This 'unprecedented' economic move is part of a long series of US sanctions against Iran's oil, gas, shipping, and financial sectors, and also includes maritime blockades of Iranian ports, as well as targeted measures against companies, brokers, and tankers accused of helping Iran sell oil abroad.
However, Iran views these statements as something new, as Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi stated that American threats are 'a distraction from America's own crisis: unprecedented debt and rising interest rates.'
Araghchi also noted in a post on X that 'intensifying failed policies will only lead to further defeat and hostility from Iranians. US economic terrorism threatens the global economy and sovereignty worldwide.'
Various Iranian media outlets, including IRIB, Tasnim, and Fars, reported that the threats are not new, and that after the 'failure of military aggression,' Trump is trying to save face through economic measures. The Tasnim publication commented on this statement, noting that 'the US has been trying for years to block any financial and economic ties with Iran, and Iran has learned to circumvent these restrictions and has become very skilled at it.'
Brett Erickson, managing partner at Obsidian Risk Advisor, shared his opinion regarding Trump's announcement, pointing out that the biggest obstacle to the US campaign remains time. He added that 'the economic war against Iran must not only yield results but must do so in the shortest possible time.'
