Increase in Wild Animals in Settlements Observed in Haridwar Due to Rainy Season

In Haridwar, due to heavy rains during the monsoon season, there has been an increase in instances of wild animals venturing into residential areas. Leopards, crocodiles, and pythons have begun appearing in the city, causing panic among local residents. Consequently, the task for environmental protection agencies has increased regarding the rescue of these animals and their safe return to the forests.

Haridwar's geographical location is determined by its proximity to Rajaji National Park and forest zones on one side, and the Ganges River on the other, with the city itself situated between them. This configuration often leads to animals entering populated areas. For example, a crocodile emerged from the Ganges in the Jagjitpur area and entered a residential zone; the forest department team promptly conducted a rescue operation and returned it to the river.

Residents are experiencing anxiety and taking precautionary measures. Recently, a leopard was captured by surveillance cameras in the upscale Bilekhwar Colony area. Pythons have also been spotted in various parts of the city, which the department caught and released back into the wild. These incidents are causing serious concern among the population.

During the monsoons, the natural habitats of animals suffer due to the rains, forcing them to search for food and safe places in cities. Since Haridwar borders Rajaji National Park and the Ganges River flows through it, the expansion of the city near forested areas intensifies the conflict between humans and wildlife. Floods and inundations during the monsoons lead to animal displacement. Forest department staff remain on constant alert, conducting rescue operations and returning animals to their natural habitat.

However, this problem is complicated by growing population pressure and urbanization. The frequent appearance of wild beasts causes fear among residents, forcing children and the elderly to stay indoors, and people avoid going out at night. The administration and the forest department have appealed to the public not to panic upon seeing an animal, not to approach it, and to immediately call the hotline. Awareness is extremely important during the monsoon period, as such incidents increase at this time.
