L&T wins contract to develop automated train system for Dubai Airport worth up to 50 billion rupees

The transport infrastructure vertical of Larsen and Toubro (L&T) has secured a major order for the design and construction of an Automated People Mover (APM) system for the first phase of Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai. The total contract value is estimated at up to 50 billion rupees, as announced by the conglomerate during its filing with the stock exchange on Thursday.

The Automated People Mover is a driverless system designed to transport passengers between various terminals and facilities within the airport. As part of this project, L&T will collaborate in a consortium with the Japanese company Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI).

The scope of work under this contract involves the complete delivery of the integrated APM system on a 'turnkey' basis, covering all stages: construction, equipment supply, testing, commissioning, and operational readiness. For the design and construction agreement, L&T will be responsible for the design, procurement, delivery, and integration of critical APM infrastructure and systems.

This infrastructure includes guideways, DC substations, power distribution systems, signaling and telecommunications, onboard communication systems for vehicles, platform-level doors, and depot equipment. The project is being implemented by the Dubai Aviation City Corporation through Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects.

L&T emphasized that this project is an integral part of the long-term, multi-phase airport expansion program. The conglomerate noted that upon full completion, Al Maktoum International Airport will become the world's largest, capable of handling 260 million passengers and processing 12 million tons of cargo annually.

Ramkumar S, Executive Vice President of L&T and Head of Transport Infrastructure, stated that this project demonstrates the scale and complexity of integrated APM Rail systems that L&T is 'uniquely equipped to deliver.' He added that thanks to proven APM systems from MHI and L&T's extensive experience in integrated systems, supported by a world-class engineering design center, the company is capable of executing such projects with a strong focus on quality and safety.

L&T positions itself as a provider of comprehensive EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) solutions for metro and railway projects, possessing competencies in design, engineering, procurement, project planning, quality control, and execution. Currently, L&T is implementing integrated railway system projects in the Mumbai Metro, Doha Metro, and Jakarta MRT networks.

L&T also noted that the Al Maktoum International Airport project strengthens its position in the region, as GCC countries continue to invest in next-generation sustainable transport, urban transit, and mobility solutions.
