China's Ministry of Justice stated on Wednesday that the recent cross-border investigation by the European Union (EU) into the Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com under the Foreign Subsidies Regulation constitutes an illegal extraterritorial jurisdiction.
In an official statement, the ministry emphasized that no organization or private individual should comply with or facilitate the implementation of illegal extraterritorial jurisdiction measures by the EU.
This statement came after the European Commission announced the start of an investigation concerning the alleged acquisition of German retailer Ceconomy by JD.com in May.
In its statement, the ministry specified that this conclusion was reached after conducting a review in accordance with China's rules on countering illegal extraterritorial measures by foreign states, which were issued in April of this year.
Furthermore, in May, citing the same set of rules, the ministry stated that the EU investigation into the Chinese security inspection company Nuctech is also an act of illegal extraterritorial jurisdiction.
