British Film Classification Council issues certificate for 'Toxic', noting higher levels of violence and sexual content

The film 'Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups' by Gittu Mohandas, which was set to compete with Ravin Singh's 'Dhurandar: The Revenge,' did not release due to conflicts in the Middle East. This film is now scheduled for release on August 26th. The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has granted this film a certificate for the UK, assigning it a higher rating for violence and sexual content compared to the films 'Dhurandar.'

The BBFC mistakenly classified 'Toxic' as Tamil rather than Kannada. According to the plot, the film depicts an influential drug cartel leader from Goa who ultimately causes his own downfall. The total running time of the film in the UK is set at 191 minutes and 41 seconds, which is approximately three hours and eleven minutes.

The BBFC assigned 'Toxic' a very strict adult rating. For scenes of violence, sex, and horrific injuries, the film received a score of 5/5. Additionally, high scores of 4/5 were given in the categories of threat and fear, indecent language, drugs, sexual violence, as well as scenes of suicide or self-harm.

The classification board detailed the film's content, indicating the presence of intense and brutal violence. Shocking scenes include indiscriminate shooting, knife attacks, throat-slitting, heavy weapon assaults, torture, hanging, arson, and dismemberment accompanied by a large amount of blood. In addition to violence, the film features explicit and intimate scenes, including those in strip clubs.

It should be noted that the films 'Dhurandar,' released in 2025, and 'Dhurandar 2,' released in March of the same year, also received a 5/5 rating for violence. However, 'Toxic' surpasses them in other aspects. The 'Dhurandar' films were assigned 4/5 ratings for horror, drugs, and language, while receiving only 2/5 and 3/5 for sexual content. Similarly, 'Dhurandar 2' received a 3/5 rating for sex scenes. Thus, the content of 'Toxic' is considered bolder and darker.

'Toxic' is a large-budget pan-Indian project. The main filming took place in Kannada and English. Starring Yash, Kira Advani, Nayantara, Huma Qureshi, Tara Sutaria, and Rukmini Vasant. The film is scheduled for release on August 26th, and it will be interesting to see the audience reaction.
