PSY's song 'Gangnam Style' reached 6 billion views on YouTube; artist's earnings are being discussed.

The South Korean artist PSY's song 'Gangnam Style,' released in 2012, caused a huge global resonance immediately after its release. Thanks to its original music video, signature horse-riding dance, and powerful chorus, this K-pop track quickly became a worldwide phenomenon. The song's popularity was so immense that thousands of parodies and dance videos were created around the world.

'Gangnam Style' entered YouTube history as the first video to surpass one billion views. Fourteen years have passed since its release on July 15, 2012, yet its popularity endures. The song ranks among the most viewed music videos on YouTube, accumulating around 6 billion views. This massive audience reach often raises the question of what significant income this single video brought to PSY and his rights holders.

Recently, a social media user on X (Twitter) asked the chatbot Grok to calculate the earnings of this video on YouTube. The AI chatbot stated that exact income data is not publicly available. Nevertheless, it referenced a 2013 Google statement indicating that the video generated over $8 million from advertising with 1.2 billion views, equivalent to 70–80 million Indian rupees.

Based on the current 6.03 billion views and standard RPM rates (revenue per thousand views) of $1–$3, Grok estimated that the rights holders earned millions of dollars from advertising alone over the years. Furthermore, substantial income was generated additionally through 'Content ID' from user-created parodies and cover videos. Meta AI also concurred, noting that due to variations in advertising rates, establishing an exact figure is difficult, as other revenue streams such as digital song downloads, brand sponsorships, and licensing are included.

'Gangnam Style' became more than just a hit; it transformed PSY into a global icon. This song demonstrated at that time that music knows no borders and that non-English compositions can capture the hearts of a global mass audience. The success of this track forever changed the methods of the music industry. Following such unprecedented success on YouTube and the rise of online streaming, the famous magazine Billboard made significant changes to its official chart compilation rules. They began incorporating streaming and YouTube data into their song popularity measurement system, starting this process with this K-pop track.
