Municipal corporation detained 200 stray dogs in Karanja city over a week following attacks

Residents of Karanja city, located in the Washim district of Maharashtra state, are concerned about the increasing number of stray dogs. Recently, two individuals, including an elderly citizen, sustained serious injuries after being attacked by dogs, prompting the municipal corporation to intensify its efforts.

During a campaign that began on Wednesday, approximately 40 dogs were detained. Adding these animals to 140 caught in previous days brought the total to around 200 in one week. On Wednesday morning, around 7 am, a municipal corporation team, along with local councilors, took to the streets of the city. The dog catching group used traps to capture stray animals in various parts of the city. Local residents were also present at the operation site.

Several days ago, an elderly person and a young man in Karanja were severely injured in a dog attack. Following this incident, public dissatisfaction with the municipal corporation increased. Local residents state that the number of stray dogs in the city's streets is constantly growing, and complaints about bites have been received. Consequently, the administration accelerated the capture campaign.

Vishal Srivastava, a medical officer for the Karanja municipal corporation, reported receiving constant complaints. The rise in the dog population and associated bite cases caused serious concern, leading to the intensification of the campaign. He specified that the captured dogs will first undergo sterilization and then be vaccinated against rabies. After five days of observation, they are planned to be released into the forest, away from the city.

According to Vishal Srivastava, the stray dog capture campaign has been ongoing for eight months. During this period, 935 dogs from different parts of the city have been rescued and caught. The municipal corporation states that work in the areas where complaints were received will continue. Overall, the growing number of stray dogs in Karanja has become a problem for residents, and following reports of attacks, the municipal corporation intensified its efforts to catch them, having saved 935 dogs over the last eight months.

Dog attacks on 161 people in city within 24 hours; 11-year-old girl seriously injured, questions raised over KDMC's functioning

A serious situation regarding stray dog menace has emerged from the Kalyan West region of Maharashtra. Dogs attacked a large number of citizens in several parts of Kalyan, including the Sandeep Hotel area on Birla College Road in Khadakpada. It is claimed that more than 161 people were bitten by dogs from Sunday afternoon to Monday afternoon.

The most affected areas were identified as Khadakpada, Birla College Road, the vicinity of the old RTO office, and Bhoirwadi. According to local residents, these dogs chased pedestrians, motorcyclists, and rickshaw drivers and attacked them whenever they found an opportunity.

In this attack, an 11-year-old girl was seriously injured and was sent to Lokmanya Tilak Hospital in Sion, Mumbai, for better medical care.

According to Dr. Sulakshana Tribhuvan, Chief Medical Officer of KDMC's Rukminibai Hospital, 58 patients reached the hospital by late Sunday night, while 103 new patients were registered by 4 PM on Monday. Many others also received treatment at private hospitals. The injured are being treated categorized into three types of injuries: cuts, nail marks, and deep wounds, with 46 serious patients admitted for special treatment.

According to hospital records, Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG) is being provided to serious patients, and Anti-Rabies Vaccine (ARV) to other patients, and it is claimed that there is an adequate stock of both medicines.

Local residents stated that due to this incident, many families have restricted their children from going outside. Even children playing in society grounds have been instructed to stay indoors, creating an atmosphere of fear throughout the area.

In light of this incident, serious questions have been raised about the sterilization and vaccination system of the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC). People alleged that no immediate action was taken regarding catching the dogs despite repeated complaints.

Following the incident, KDMC Commissioner Abhinav Goyal and Mayor Harshali Thavil Choudhary visited the Dog Sterilization and Vaccination Center in Phateepool. The Mayor assured that the administration has been trying to catch the dogs since last night and directed that the sterilization and vaccination work be accelerated.

Umesh Borgaonkar, a leader of the Thakre faction, called the administration's response shameful after this major incident and stated that the municipal corporation does not have any concrete plan.

Currently, a drive is underway in the area to catch the dogs and control the situation, although this incident has raised widespread concern about the growing problem of stray dogs in the city.
