Research indicates that primates, such as simians and monkeys, are not the only beings who enjoy the company of pets, as they demonstrate caring, nurturing affectionate bonds, and even adopting individuals of other species.

Although in nature interaction between species usually has a clear objective, such as defense against predators or assistance in hunting food, the scenarios observed by scientists deviate from these established norms.

The collected evidence points to interactions between primates and various animals, including lizards, birds, deer, squirrels, dogs, and cats. The most frequent forms of interaction were surprisingly limited to play and mutual grooming, although in certain instances, the relationship resembled an adoption process.

According to the authors, this behavior directly reflects the social dynamic that primates themselves maintain within their own species. It was observed that young individuals had a greater tendency to interact with animals of other species, while adult females frequently nursed the adopted animals. In contrast, adult males were the only ones to show indifference, occasionally even exhibiting violence.

The researchers speculate that the motivation for monkeys and simians to adopt companions lies in loneliness. Like humans, these primates seek the company of other individuals, whether to participate in daily hygiene activities or to cuddle together.

Notable examples include Koko the gorilla, known for having a cat companion. Furthermore, there are reports of a friendship between an elephant and a dog, a crow that took in a cat, and a goose that lives with a turtle.

Historically, the oldest records of humans with pets date back 14,000 years in Germany, where a couple was found buried next to their dog. However, it is likely that this bond originated before this period, with the domestication of wolves, which occurred more than 15 thousand years ago and gave rise to dogs. With the advancement of domestication, this connection tends to shift from a purely utilitarian function to a bond more laden with affection.

The idea of investigating primates with affectionate bonds with other animals arose when Cyril Grueter, a biological anthropologist and primatologist from the University of Oxford, visited the Shanghai Zoo in China. On that day, he witnessed a gibbon female holding and stroking a small mouse in her hands.

The researcher had other encounters with this behavior. In a reserve in Africa, in Uganda, Ishe and Dembe, two young Eastern chimpanzees, were jumping between the forest branches when Grueter approached. What followed surprised the scholar: the pair of chimpanzees approached a neighboring red-tailed monkey, not with hostility, as is usual among chimpanzees, but with gestures of affection, starting to groom the other's tail.

To go beyond isolated cases, Grueter and his team reviewed scientific literature and consulted primatology specialists for similar reports. The final article consolidated 427 records involving 88 species of primates. The data confirmed that all primates, regardless of species, exhibited some behavior that could be associated with pet keeping.

The authors emphasize that, for the animals, there is no exact parallel to the human concept of 'having a pet'; the most appropriate term would be to describe the exchange of affection between animals belonging to different species.

Abdul Basit, an engineer working at Al Khooz, encountered a similar situation when returning to his apartment in Al Nahda, Dubai, after a six-week absence. He reported: 'The moment I opened the door, there was a very strong, unpleasant smell inside the apartment.' Initially, he assumed the cause was the prolonged closure of the home. After opening the windows and turning on the air conditioner, he expected the smell to disappear, but it did not.

Soon, Basit discovered another problem: the air conditioner was malfunctioning, emitting a strange odor while operating. Later, he noticed a water leak from one of the units. Basit noted: 'After a multi-hour journey, the last thing you expect is to return home and immediately start repairing and cleaning the air conditioner.' Ultimately, the apartment required thorough cleaning, and the air conditioner needed inspection before the family could settle in properly.

Basit's experience is not isolated during the return period from summer holidays, according to cleaning and air conditioning specialists in Dubai and Sharjah. Shamwil Khan from Clean Touch, operating in Al Nahda, Sharjah, stated that his team visits at least three to four homes daily. He added: 'Since families have started returning from the summer break, our schedule has become very busy. Sometimes we have to reschedule appointments for the next day because all slots are taken.'

According to Khan, homes left closed for weeks can have several issues: ranging from accumulated dust and unpleasant odors to damp spots, insects, and mold around ventilation openings or air conditioner walls. Khan emphasized: 'Kitchens and bathrooms often require the most attention. If drains haven't been used for weeks, a strong smell can appear. In some cases, regular cleaning is not enough, and the client requests a full deep clean.'

Asad Niyaz from Al Nafiz AC Repair, who works in the Abu Hail area of Dubai, faced similarly busy periods. He reported: 'We receive calls throughout the day and usually visit at least three to four homes daily. The schedule is almost completely full.'

Weak cooling power is among the most frequent complaints. During inspections, Niyaz notes that technicians find dirty filters, clogged drainage lines, dust on coils, or water leaks. He explained: 'If the air conditioner has been off for a long time, moisture can also accumulate inside the system, and residents sometimes complain about an unpleasant odor when they turn it back on.'

The combination of high temperature and humidity in the UAE makes homes particularly vulnerable when cooling and ventilation systems are absent for extended periods. The home services platform Justlife reported that up to 30 percent of homes this year might face mold growth inside air conditioning systems. Heat, humidity, dust, and trapped moisture can contribute to accumulation in filters, ducts, coils, and drain pans, sometimes even before residents notice visible signs.

Dr. Saira Haider, Medical Director at Justlife, noted that residents often take action only after noticing an odor or reduced cooling. She advised: 'Regular air conditioner maintenance is one of the most practical steps Dubai residents can take before summer,' adding that by the time an odor or cooling issue appears, accumulation may have been happening for some time.

This problem was observed in previous summers in the UAE. In 2024, the Khaleej Times reported a 70 percent increase in requests for mold removal services by one company, while another company recorded a 42 percent rise in mold inspections in July and August. Requests for air duct cleaning and mold remediation doubled between May and August at a third firm.

DEWA previously told the Khaleej Times that while turning off the air conditioner during a long vacation reduces energy consumption, high indoor temperatures and humidity can lead to mold formation, unpleasant odors, and damage to furniture and electronics.

Experts recommend servicing and cleaning air conditioner filters before traveling, as well as checking for leaks or partially blocked drainage lines. Existing leaks or condensate issues should be addressed, not left for weeks. Justlife advises maintaining the air conditioner temperature between 26–28 degrees Celsius in fan or auto mode during a long absence. Previous experts interviewed by the Khaleej Times also recommended keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent to reduce the likelihood of mold development.

Niyaz warned that residents returning to a very hot apartment should not immediately lower the thermostat to 16°C or 18°C hoping for faster cooling. If weak cooling, unusual odor, water leak, or strange noise is observed, an air conditioner inspection must be conducted first. Basit admitted that his experience changed his approach to preparing for the next vacation. He said: 'We spend so much time preparing for vacation—tickets, luggage, and everything else—but little thought about the home we leave behind. Next time, I will definitely service the air conditioner before leaving and arrange for someone to check the apartment while we are away.'

Several days ago, an elderly person and a young man in Karanja were severely injured in a dog attack. Following this incident, public dissatisfaction with the municipal corporation increased. Local residents state that the number of stray dogs in the city's streets is constantly growing, and complaints about bites have been received. Consequently, the administration accelerated the capture campaign.

Vishal Srivastava, a medical officer for the Karanja municipal corporation, reported receiving constant complaints. The rise in the dog population and associated bite cases caused serious concern, leading to the intensification of the campaign. He specified that the captured dogs will first undergo sterilization and then be vaccinated against rabies. After five days of observation, they are planned to be released into the forest, away from the city.

According to Vishal Srivastava, the stray dog capture campaign has been ongoing for eight months. During this period, 935 dogs from different parts of the city have been rescued and caught. The municipal corporation states that work in the areas where complaints were received will continue. By correcting these interpretation errors, scientists concluded that the atmosphere's reaction to storms is continuous and linear.

Paulo Simões, a researcher and professor at the Mackenzie Center for Radio Astronomy and Astrophysics (CRAAM), explained to Olhar Digital how the data revision changed the perception of risk. He stated that the study suggests that, due to the way uncertainties in solar wind measurements are handled, a geomagnetic disturbance indicator in the Earth's poles could be up to double the currently recorded value.

The professor added that the study's authors propose adjustments to data interpretation and warn that extreme events can generate consequences greater than previously predicted.

The scientific concern extends beyond rare and catastrophic events. According to the researcher, intense but relatively frequent solar storms already cause problems in radio communications, instabilities in geolocation systems, electronic failures in satellites, and flight path deviations in civil aviation in polar regions. Thus, the study and monitoring of space weather have become a global necessity.

In this context, safeguarding terrestrial infrastructure depends on the integration of various observation technologies, not on a single solution. To ensure safe monitoring, it is necessary to combine information from ground telescopes, orbiting satellites, and new digital models.

Simões emphasizes that no isolated tool or technique excels, as solar activity is extremely complex, just like its effects on space weather and consequently on our technology. He concludes by saying that monitoring conducted by telescopes, whether old or new, on the ground or in space, are complementary, providing different types of data on solar magnetism, eruptions, solar wind, and the conditions of the near-Earth space environment.
