The Mamelodi Sundowns team secured a convincing 2-0 victory over Marumo Gallants in the Betway Premiership tournament. This match took place at the Loftus Versfeld stadium in Pretoria on Wednesday evening.
Forward Cassius Mailula's return to the Mamelodi Sundowns squad continued as he scored his third goal in four matches, ensuring a comfortable win for the CAF champion team against Marumo Gallants.
Mailula's second-half goal sealed the game after Malipongwe Khoza opened the scoring in the first half. However, this victory came with serious losses for the team, as South Africa national team right-back Khuliso Mudau suffered a severe injury after 37 minutes of play.
The home team dominated all aspects of the match, especially in ball control and territorial advantage, and observers believe they should have shown much more than a modest one-goal lead at halftime.
Match Progression
Favaaz Basadien returned to the starting lineup after being absent against Kaizer Chiefs and once again demonstrated high class when given the opportunity to play. The left wing-back early tested Gallants' debut goalkeeper, Emile Lako, with a quick shot, but the Cameroonian keeper managed the task. A couple of minutes later, Basadien was involved in the build-up again when he delivered a cross into the Gallants penalty area, which was met by Brian Leon, but the Colombian player could only direct the header towards Lako.
Gallants looked sluggish at the start of the quarter, while Sundowns exerted strong pressure on them. Batousi Aubaas, replacing injured Tebogo Mokokene, sent a long shot that sailed over the Gallants crossbar, and Leon attempted an impressive volley shot that could have gone into the Gallants net if it had been just a meter closer to Lako.
The visiting team was clearly stunned, and they were lucky not to be penalized when Lako stepped out of his goal area and was intercepted by Marcelo Allende; nevertheless, Sundowns failed to capitalize on this moment.
When Sundowns began attacking inside the Gallants penalty area, a breakthrough occurred when Basadien delivered a cross to the far post, where Aubaas directed the ball back to Malipongwe Khoza, who shot it into the goal, opening the score for Sundowns. Sundowns' dominance did not end after the first goal, as they continued to create numerous scoring opportunities, and winger Tashrik Matthews also missed a chance to increase the lead shortly before halftime, shooting wide of the far post.
The situation remained the same in the second half: Cassius Mailula, who started after the goal against Chiefs over the weekend, also missed a chance when a clean pass was threaded into the goal. Every missed chance gave Gallants hope of a possible equalizer on the counterattack, especially when experienced Themba Zwane, who replaced in the second half, also missed in a critical situation in the Gallants penalty area.
