Approximately 600 female students at a government boarding school in Amavati, Maharashtra, have left the dormitory due to ghost-related fears. The incident began on July 22nd with unusual behavior from four students. Currently, the administration has prepared a new dormitory on the school grounds, where the students will be moved starting September 1st.
The situation escalated on July 22nd at the school located in Dome, Amavati, when four students suddenly started crying and then laughing loudly. This behavior created an atmosphere of fear in the dormitory. Officials suggest that psychological stress might be the cause.
According to a news agency, many rumors spread among students and local residents after the event. There was a belief that spirits inhabit the mahua tree on the school grounds. After the tree was cut down, some people linked the students' behavior to this factor.
Another hypothesis concerned a local temple located behind the school. Rumors circulated that the school's drainage system had affected the temple, causing the deity's displeasure. A third discussion involved the soul of a young man from the tribe who died in a nearby field. As a result of these stories spreading, about 600 Adivasi students left the school and returned home. Approximately 810 students study at this boarding institution.
In the opinion of officials, fear, stress, superstitions, and local beliefs played a role in this situation.
The prepared psychological report also mentioned local beliefs about ghosts. The report connected this unusual situation to superstitions, fear, psychological stress, and local convictions. It was noted that some women in the village later developed similar psychological symptoms.
A separate new section has been built for the students within the school complex, equipped with folding beds to accommodate all students. According to the report, the students will be moved to the new building starting September 1st. Meanwhile, senior representatives of the Maharashtra Committee for Eradication of Ignorance met with the students and attempted to alleviate their fears through conversations.
