The return of Dion Slabbert from injury has provided timely reinforcement for the Sharks team ahead of their confrontation with the Lions in the Currie Cup. Ahead of the decisive match on Friday, the team is preparing to host the Lions in Pietermaritzburg.
Low forward Tino Mavesere returned to position No. 8 in the Sharks squad. The return of Slabbert, who recovered from an injury sustained in the game against New Zealand, gave the team an extra boost. Coach Mike Walls emphasized the importance of this player's leadership qualities for the collective.
Walls noted: 'Most noticeably, we have brought back Dion Slabbert after the injury he sustained last week in the game against New Zealand. He will bring some leadership to the group.'
This experience may prove particularly valuable for the Sharks, who are striving to regain their footing after a heavy 55–21 defeat to Griquas in Kimberley last week. Walls admitted that the team used the past week for self-analysis following the setbacks and believes that the return of players like Slabbert will help them gain the necessary composure before the final stage of the campaign.
The Sharks team made several changes to its lineup. In addition to Slabbert's return, Fivayinkosi 'Rambo' Kubeka and Simphive Ngobese, who played on the bench last week, also made it into the starting lineup. Kubeka took the lowhead position, while Jaco du Toit moved to the reserve, and Ngobese took the tighthead spot.
There was also a significant reshuffle among the low forwards: Meno Barnard moved to the flank, Jean-Henri Smith entered the starting lineup, and Tino Mavesere moved from the flank to position No. 8, as the Sharks are dealing with injury issues.
The attacking line remained largely unchanged, except that Djanko Parch moved to the inside centre position, freeing up Albi Bester, who is now on the bench. Ross Broad continues to play captain at scrum-half, and Tim Swiel plays at flyhalf.
The Sharks understand that they cannot afford any more mistakes if they want to reach the semi-finals. Walls aims for a strong finish to the campaign in the last two home matches. 'We are targeting these last two games to finish strongly, and then, hopefully, give ourselves a chance to make the semi-finals,' he stated.
The match also has a community aspect: funds raised from ticket sales will go towards supporting the recovery efforts of the injured Maritzburg Rugby Club player, Jeremy Swan.
